Just playing in Phil Foglio’s universe. The New Texas Ranger is a member of the Team. a human space law enforcement team consisting of members of various human and mutagenic sub-species. Sam Cooper is the oldest and most experienced member of the team and its primary pistol marksman. Sam has been eliminating the asteroid pirates, one at time, while searching for the rest of his team. The Team's New Texas gunman likes his guns and his knives, but mostly his guns. Sam slid his pistols out while he eased his way forward all stealthy like. The asteroid pirates' base wasn't particularly difficult to get into. It was the pirates themselves that were the problem. These guys favored cyber enhancements, a lot of cyber enhancements. It was part of their particular sub-culture like facial tattoos, branding and slave trading.

Once a few years ago he tried sneaking up on a pirate that actually had a rearward radar installed in the back of his head. It was effective, so much so that Sam couldn't sneak up on that guy while he was on watch. But, who does that? Seriously, how much brain tissue got sacrificed for that? Too much as it turned out. And in the end the “rearward radar” guard was defeated by a small multi-purpose rocket. The radar did work just as the owner had anticipated. The pirate had apparently, been immediately alerted that the missile coming for him. Sam recalled that the guy had turned his red-tattooed face into the rocket just as it exploded. Guess, he should have invested in some energy shields, armor plating or other sort of counter measure. Knowing the missile was coming and evading the missile were two wholly different things. Sam lost the element of surprise on that mission, but made up for it in shock and awe.

And he was really chewed out for that one. But he had been chewed out before. He figured that you had to be alive to be chewed out, so that was okay.
