Description When I first saw the spoiler clip for Maud Pie, the first thing that came to my mind is "oh, an emo Pinkie Pie". I was wrong, but I guess I wasn't far off. The whole episode can really be wrapped up into one line. The Mane 5 attempt to befriend a girl who emotes and acts vastly different than them. Pinkie Pie claims that Maud has all the personality traits of the rest of the group, but she never really exhibits them. So, then, who is Maud Pie? Many people equate her to Raven from Teen Titans, but from my limited knowledge of her, I don't think that's quite right. Raven seems the type to be more clinically depressed. Maud isn't depressed. She just doesn't show emotion. Coming from someone who is pretty chronically depressed, I show much emotion, and even some laughs. So I don't think she's Raven. You know who I equate her to? LJ Gibbs. That's right. The "functional mute" from NCIS. Maud loves what she does and doesn't show any emotion. Everything she says seems to be about her job, rocks. Gibbs shows little emotion and is always focused on his job and nothing else. Even when you think Gibbs is enjoying something else, woodworking, he's usually there thinking about whatever case he's on. Both characters are hardcore focused on one thing, and they don't really show any kinds of emotion.

Does that make Maud a good or bad character? I think...bad. One dimensional and boring. She's just rocks rocks rocks rocks rocks. Sound familiar? Yeah, it's a more extreme version of Pinkie Pie. But at least with Pinkie, we get to see her develop. We only get Maud for one episode. We probably won't see her again, and if we do, it will be a short cameo.

But I liked her. Especially after a second watch. Because once you understand that she IS showing emotion through...well, NOT showing emotion, it gets a lot more interesting. And yes, she is relate-able to me, at least in some small part. I never get like, super excited for anything, ever. But it doesn't mean I don't want to do something, or see something. And the weird part is, I think Pinkie Pie kind of acts like her translator. In the same vein that Fluttershy translates for the group when talking to animals. Pinkie understands what emotion Maud is actually feeling. Living with her probably made it really easy for her. And holy crap, is she strong. Like, supernaturally strong. Like, an earth pony shouldn't be able to do these things strong. She eats a gem. Yeah, Spike eats gems, but he's a dragon. She...she digested it too, I would imagine. Whoa. And she blasted through a boulder like no problem. And threw one farther than Rainbow Dash. I don't even understand how. Is this the product of just being an earth pony? It can't be, she's the only one we've seen that strong. Even Applejack couldn't do that. It can't really be a product of her spending so much time on a rock farm either. The strength and speed required doesn't really translate to whatever she does as a job. I have a different idea. Pinkie Pie has her "Pinkie Sense" and other things that make her just as magical as unicorns or whatever fuels pegasi abilities. I think there's something about the Pie family. Something that gives them some kind of magical properties. Maybe they mined some rocks and they turned out to be some kind of radioactive rocks, and it gave the family super powers. Maud got super rock, D&D dwarf-type powers. Pinkie Pie got super energetic powers. Now we need to see the rest of the family, and see what kind of powers they have.

Pinkie always works better with her jokes when she's the focus of the episode. As far as the Pinkie Factor goes, she was pretty on most of the episode. She wasn't as funny as she could be, but at least she didn't go overboard. I think the best lines in the show were said by Maud and Rainbow. Maud's "it's like hide and seek, but waaay more intense", had me laughing. I'm not sure why. Rainbow's reference to Winston Churchhill's "mystery wrapped in a riddle" quote was her best line, especially with the igneous at the end, and the explanation as to why she didn't mess up the quote. I like the dialogue here because it's more..I don't want to say adult humor, but that's the closest I can think of.

So, on the flip side of Maud/Gibbs not showing emotion at all, there's one character that kind of steals the show anytime he's active. And that is...ANGEL. That's right. The unspeaking bunny always makes me smile. He can show so much emotion by not speaking at all. We need to see more angel emotes.

But anyway, we did see emotion from Maud. She got worried for Pinkie, and we even saw her smile at the end. It was nice. But...it made me think that the entire point of the episode was the buildup to that. But it did make her endearing, so it's good. Also, I like her..frock? Is that what they called it? Kind of looked like a hoodie with no hood.

So, overall, not bad. I like that it was a unique idea. We haven't see a "here's a sibling" episode. The wedding two-parter doesn't really count that much, since the sibling itself wasn't the plot. There was a whole hell of a lot more going on than that. So yeah, I give it a pass. Just promise me I get more Angel later on.

Maud could use a bit more personality than the rock shtick. She's not bad, but the "rock rock rock" thing did get a bit old hat after a while.
