Description This is another one for Prehistoric Times, this time the feature is on Gorgonopsids. These aren't really dinosaurs, they're an earlier type of animal called a Therapsid, and exist someplace between mammals and reptiles, or so I'm told. They're kinda rat-like. The other creature here is some kind of Moschops-like animal, I'm really not sure. There was a book I saw once that had a lot of therapsid pictures in it, and there were these interesting bulldog-like herbivores that I liked, but I was never able to remember what they were. It was a kid's book from quite a while ago, so it's possible they were not accurately drawn at all! But I couldn't seem to find any clue as to what those were, so this guy is kind of a combination of what I wanted to draw and what I could find reference for.

Yeah, not very scientific for those Prehistoric Times guys, they are big on science over there.

I'm all about my shadows in this one, I have a tendency to just darken the colors, whereas what us propa artists are supposed to do is mix up the colors some. Does it work? I'm pleased with it but I've never really pulled it off before. I think it really shapes things nicely.

You did a lovely job with the coloring. It makes things, especially the gorgon cuties (I have a soft spot for them), pop out and seem almost warmer? What do I know, I can't shade to save my life XDDD.

And the water asparagus <3.

No chance at all that you might remember the title of that book?

Definitely not, it would be in my collection if I could!

Well, you're not the only one to not remember the title of an interesting book. I once checked out from the library (when I was twelve, this back in the day) a well illustrated book on ancient mammals. One page had a good picture of Therapsids. If only I could remember the title of that book...

You know what, that shading thing really gets me too. Up until recently I basically just darkened the colors too. What I think mixing up the colors is supposed to do is give it a warmer/richer effect based on the color of the light. So if the light is like sunset, golden-yellow-orange, then the shade would be the opposite of that, blue. I've tried to do it myself, but I haven't really practiced shading like that, so I still have a long way to go, myself.

But anyway, I think the shading is done pretty well in this picture! It's got a nice early morning effect.
