WOO! Okay so, I'm doing this for the Kubo and the Two Strings contest that's going on right now because I love this movie and the prizes are freakin' sweet, and if nothing else at least it gave me an excuse to do fanart for something I love!

When I started this I knew I wanted it to have some papercraft/papercutting elements to it because I thought it would be fitting, but I also knew there would be nooo way for me to do the whole THING like that, and I wanted the characters to be hand-drawn. So this thing is kind of a mixture of both! The sky and the moon are entirely scrapbooking paper, the mountains and lanterns are mostly the same, but with some further detailing and coloring provided by moi. The characters themselves, the water, the...background of the foreground? And the little images floating around the outside are all done in traditional media. It was a lot of work and I learned a lot in the process (including how I could've done certain things better..) but in all I'm happy with the turnout! Oh, and there are some very light digital touches, like general editing and adding light to the lanterns and the moon.

I'm not sure I stuck to the contest theme of 'overcoming obstacles' very well, but my reasoning was this: to me, the greatest obstacle Kubo has yet to face is what begins at the END of the movie, with taking what he's learned through his adventure and also learning to forgive his grandpa and all that fun stuff, so here he is sharing the tales of his journey with the very man who started the whole thing, completely unawares.
