Description The hand on the clock moved. Five minutes until midnight. Adam took a drag off his cigarette and tried to ignore the blood trickling down his face. Maybe the Mark would disappear before it was time. You never knew. Miracles happened.
He snorted to himself and blew out the smoke in his lungs. There would be no miracle for him. Jehova and Lucifer had been chomping at the bit for nearly five centuries now. They had their troops lined up, their plans wrapped up; all they needed was for him to give the signal, and they wouldn’t let him get away with shirking his duty. He half-laughed, half-cried at that thought and took another pull from the cigarette.
He tipped his head back and let the smoke out of his lungs. Four minutes to midnight. He hoped his friends would be okay. Jehovah wouldn’t hold their friendship with him against him, would he?
The mark of the Beast on his forehead was burning now. Three minutes until the end. His cigarette was nearly done. He looked at it blearily. The wisp of smoke that came from its end looked like a woman. Would Eve be okay? He really didn’t know.
Two minutes left. The Mark started to glow like the last few embers in a dying fire. He should have grabbed a drink on his way here.
One minute left. No more time. Adam ground the end of the cigarette into the floor. It was almost a relief that this would soon be over.
The clock struck midnight and fire filled his veins.
