Description I said I'd do another tutorial/step by step/whatever someday, and here it is! This is the info on my current inking technique. ....... And of course the pens I use to do it. I'm not sure how useful this is, but I do hope it might be a little.

Oh! And to see the finished page in full of course, click here! [link] To read the whole comic from the start click here. [link]

Very informative!

Thought I might have missed it but do you use a lightbox to transfer the digital sketch to the paper?

H0lyhandgrenade In reply to ypnogatis [2013-11-12 14:04:45 +0000 UTC]

No, I just print it out in faint red and ink right on top of that.

Thanks for sharing your methods, I would've never thought of sketching digitally mainly because I completely ignored the fact that I could make the lines invisible afterwards. I really want to give this a try when I have a printer at hand! I really love your art style, by the way. It looks amazing

Very interesting. Never thought about sketching digitally and then inking traditionally. I think I'll try this method. My ink pencils are itching to be used.

Thanks for a good tutorial and tips!

Thanks a ton for posting this! I'm not much of an artist but I've been working on inking and I feel that some ideas out of this will help me with my own process. So again thank you lots!

Wow, that's very fantastic! I agree about doing the sharpie part traditionally rather than fill in blacks digitally; there's just something neat about shading those huge black sections in by hand, and being able to see it on the actual paper in front of you.

Oooch... the 0,05 pen... *___* My dream is to get one of this kind of pen. I have two uniball pens, one 0,2 and one 0,8, but I've never seen the 0,05 one.

H0lyhandgrenade In reply to enerai [2013-04-10 14:57:40 +0000 UTC]

They are about, but if you're struggling I'd advise looking online xD They're quite easy to get that way.

enerai In reply to H0lyhandgrenade [2013-04-10 17:50:27 +0000 UTC]

Yes, they are, but shipping costs are way too expensive XD It's like buying two pens instead of one XD I will propably look for them in the bigger city, when I will have an opportunity to do so.

Did I say that I love your comic and read every page you update? XD

This looks amazing! After seeing a bunch of the other finished pages it's cool to see the step-by-step process that goes into making each page. It certainly makes me appreciate the comic that much more.

Thanks for sharing!

Hatching, I honestly forgot how powerful that stuff is. The ability to shade and add textures at the same time.

Very helpful tutorial. I never even thought about making the outline thickness based on the light source. I normally just pick a pen size and stick with it. I may have to try to do that next time.

This is great tutorial, but when u jumped from details and hatching to the final product. how did u ge the black so dark? was it like a scanner setting or computer program?

Really interesting to see how you work.I'm really glad there are still people who prefer to do stuff by hand - I really need to get back into hand-inking and stuff. What about the gray tones like the ones on DT and George's hair? Do you do those with marker or add those digitally?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

H0lyhandgrenade In reply to MissTooni [2013-04-10 00:16:04 +0000 UTC]

Oh those are digital xD I just add in things like that as quick as I can.

Furrama [2013-04-09 23:51:22 +0000 UTC]

I use those brands of pen, minus the Sharpies, ( I don't like how bad they bleed through printer paper). I'm partial to the S size and the B size myself. Or the extra big B if I'm wanting to fill a lot in.

Back when I made comic pages I did that a wee bit different. I liked tumbnailing by hand, they laying out in photoshop (just the borders), then printing out the borders and drawing the rest in with a regular pencil. Then I'd scan the pencils in, turn it all light blue, then print again and ink that. Then scan again, get rid of the blue channel, play with the levels, and save it as greyscale. Then I'd move it back to RBG and I'd be mostly done, minus cleanup and other things.

Buuuut my way eats more paper.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

H0lyhandgrenade In reply to Furrama [2013-04-09 23:54:18 +0000 UTC]

That is EXACTLY what I used to do xD However, I found by making the sketching digital and cutting out that stage of scanning and printing etc, it just made things a little faster. Just enough to make a difference. And indeed, less paper. But yeah, I can certainly see the draw of keeping the major part of the drawing stage traditional, considering how long I did it that way.

Also, you know the bottem of the art piece it's only black? before all the photoshop it's kinda streaky, but the final image is completely black! How did you do that?

H0lyhandgrenade In reply to Sakera-Draw [2013-04-10 00:04:55 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry, you weren't annoying. You were nice about how you asked xD As for the making the inks clean, that's all done in Photoshop. I might make a tutorial on how I do that sometime too
