Hm...would jewelry glue work between the layers instead of TLS?

i wouldn't recommend it unless the clay is already baked.

Shelty-Mety In reply to ??? [2008-05-26 17:14:02 +0000 UTC]

I\'m a bit confused with the way you actually cut the cake and keep the layers perfect at the same time.

When I do it, the layers all splodge together.

Any help?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HanaClayWorks In reply to Shelty-Mety [2008-05-27 03:18:45 +0000 UTC]

the trick is to either freeze the cake before cutting it or letting it sit overnight before cutting so that i has some time to harden up a bit. the reason for this is because when you work with the clay, it becomes extremely soft and will squish together if you tried to cut it like that. letting the clay sit a little bit will allow the clay to "cool down" and firm up before you cut.

another trick in case you don't want to waste all that good clay because it squishes together or whatnot, try sanding down the sides after you bake it - it'll help to get rid of some of the surface imperfections.

let me know if you have more questions!

WoO-angel In reply to ??? [2008-05-22 11:35:31 +0000 UTC]

so the trick is to refrigerate overnight to make good cuts... AHHH.. now i understand..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HanaClayWorks In reply to WoO-angel [2008-05-27 03:23:27 +0000 UTC]

*nods* yes grasshoppah! haha
all lame-ness aside, you could also cut the cake after baking if you work really REALLY fast - meaning before it cools... but that's kind of dangerous and i wouldn't recommend it to everyone.

WoO-angel In reply to HanaClayWorks [2008-05-27 08:45:28 +0000 UTC]

hahaha i shall follow into your footsteps.. and i'm not sure touching something really hot.. and making a mistake after its done for isn't it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HanaClayWorks In reply to WoO-angel [2008-06-08 05:12:42 +0000 UTC]

pretty much. but then again, you have a better chance of squishing it and really making it done for if it's not yet baked.

What did you use as the metal parts for like charms and stuff

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

HanaClayWorks In reply to gorillazlovelife07 [2008-03-20 05:41:08 +0000 UTC]

just silver or silver-plated eyepins! they're essentially just wires with a little round bend at the end where you can hook other things onto!

here's a link for reference:

things called eyepins are usually used..they're like skinny sticks of metal with a loop at the end that the chain for the necklace/whatever goes through
