It’s so satisfying and vindicating to see a show you love live up to its potential.

When I first watched Amphibia back in December of 2019, I know that I am going to witness something very special. Its beautiful animation, wonderful characters, and a perfectly laid out story gave me the impression that it is going to be a show that I know can achieve the level of greatness that its predecessors have done before. With the release of Season 2, I can now say that Amphibia has reached that level of greatness.

With the snow on the mountains of the valley melted, it is about time for the Plantars to move out from the valley and travel to Amphibia’s capital city of Newtopia. An ancient city filled with the knowledge that may hold the key to getting Anne back home. The first 10 episodes of the season are a wild ride as it focuses on the journey of the Plantars towards Newtopia. These episodes have done a great job of developing the main plot with lore and little bits of continuity, while also being great self-contained stories. And these episodes are all fun adventures that offer much variety on showcasing the growth of all its characters. The road trip being only the first quarter of the season is also a good choice when it comes to the structure of the season. It’s not too short so that we can still appreciate the wonderful yet terrifying world Amphibia, but it is also not too long so that it doesn’t feel overbearing or sluggish with the story’s pacing, it’s just the perfect length.

Once we do get to Newtopia, the season got even more interesting. After 14 months of anticipation and waiting, we finally got to see Marcy Wu. Amphibia’s third human and one of my favorite characters of the year. The next episodes featuring Newtopia are a blast as well. It’s so satisfying to see the beautiful city of Newtopia be explored while also having the chaotic and fun adventures the Plantars have back in Wartwood, and on the road to Newtopia. Aside from Marcy, we also got introduced to new characters like King Andrias and Lady Olivia. Two characters that helped advanced the plot forward while also being interesting themselves. And with the arrival to Newtopia, we finally have the chance to discuss the Calamity Box, which is something that is a long time coming. The season also has a lot of interesting stories brewing in the background. You’ve got the Sasha and Grime who are planning to storm Newtopia after the destruction of Toad Tower, the robot who is seemingly following the Plantars, the mystery of the human artifacts, the three girls impending reunion, and of course, the mystery of the Calamity Box. Adding all of these stories with Anne’s mission to go back home already make Amphibia’s great story even more engaging.

Amphibia Season 2 is turning out to be something very special. I have already loved this show back then, but the amount of quality this season offers has made me loved it even more. It retains the elements that I love from the first season like its great humor and characterization while also focusing more on the story and worldbuilding and it balances these two parts very well. If the mid-season finale indicates anything, it's that the second half of this season is going to be insane. I can't wait to see what's next.
