Description

My Magnum Opus.

As part of my vocational course for the second half term of college, I was tasked to create and make either a 2D animation or a 3D model project of a character of our choosing. For my choice, I went for a 3D Project, this being a sculpture using modroc plastering and the character I've chosen is actually my own character, Fowler Hedgehog. If you don't know, Fowler Hedgehog is my OC I created back in 2017, thanks to the avatar creator in Sonic Forces. He later became my online persona by 2018 for my Twitter Account: VacentTest, which was originally a throwaway account, turned RP account then secondary account before becoming my main when I deactivated my first Twitter account. Since 2017, Fowler has mean a lot to me. I wanted to get something big that features him. Originally it was a custom action figure (that I'm still waiting for my turn) and a custom made plushie (which I received no response since June). I still wanted something big and when this project came to task, I figured out what I wanted to do. If I can't get a custom made thing at this point, then I'll just have to make it myself.

This modroc project had a deadline of December 15th, I began this project on November 3rd and finished this on December 10th - a week before the deadline. This took me in total a month and a week to finish. This is because for the first few weeks, my class could only be in that class room for a few hours, before having to go to a different room due to the night classes that were on. This would change by November 24th when the night classes ended.

With help from my teachers, I had a plan in store to how I can make this model and finish it by the deadline. This is what happened:

November 3rd - The planning stage, I would draw out an idea of the pose using shapes. Since I had extra time after finishing the pose, I grabbed some wrapping paper and crunched it into two shapes - one being a sphere for the head and a rounded cuboid for the body. After getting the right size for both, I continuously wrapped sellotape to stuck those shapes together and to make it harden, this is for the modroc.

November 10th - Continuing with getting the pose together, I would use the wrapping paper and roll it into 4 cylinder shapes for the arms and legs and cutting it to get the right length and used the sellotape to stick it all together. Next, I crunched some more wrapping paper to create two more sphere shapes for the gloves. To lessen the time this will take me and for easierness, I went for the Animal Crossing approach and just did the hands as spheres; stuck them with sellotape at the bottom of the arms. Finally, I had some hard cardboard card and draw out two ear shapes, a three spine quill shape that will be placed onto the back and two shapes for the bottom of the boots - hard to do I will mention. Once again, everything was stuck together with sellotape, ready for modrocing it.

November 17th - On this day, I didn't really do much with modrocing the model. This was because my teachers wanted me to just practise with the modroc procress with a few pieces of card so I know how to stick it on properly and how to mold it. Nonetheless, I was able to get a start with by modrocing some parts of the head by dipping the modroc plaster into a bowl of water to damp it, then place it onto the model and then use my fingers to spread it so that the holes from the plaster is covered and so it can be stuck down properly.

November 24th - The modroc process went great and I managed to complete it all, especially with the night classes no longer being on, giving me more time. I began with the head and spines, moving to the body, then the arms, gloves, shorts, legs and finally boots, the latter being the hardest. Once the modroc dried out, I continued to add layers to it to try and give it more detail, like with the coller being molded and the cuffs of the gloves and boots getting that detail too. Once it was all done, I left it to dry for a week.

December 1st - Everything was all dried, so I began to paint it. But first, before fully painting it, to try and make the paint stronger to put on and to try and cover up much of the holes, I undercoated it with some white acrylic paint. Once undercoated and used a pencil to draw out the eyes, muzzle, ears, mouth and stripes of the gloves so I know where to paint each thing , now it was the painting process. This was tricky to do because I had to mix up some of the paints I was provided to try and get to the right colours that I wanted. When I got to right colours, I painted it normally, beginning with the gloves, collar and shorts and then the fur colour and eyes, before rushing to paint the boots. I didn't managed to get to doing the skin colour as I didn't have time cause I needed to clean everything up.

December 8th - I continued on with the painting, to the best of my abilities I tried to use the same colours from last week, trying to remember the correct mix, and to cover some of the white parts that were showing. I also added the grey soles at the bottom of the boots, painted the skin colour, darken the shorts as originally, it did felt like it was blended with the skin too much, added the black len and used white paint to add the shines to the eyes and nose. Finally I used a black felt tip pen to add a bit of extra boldness and detail to the eyes, ears, the stripes of the gloves and the jumper. And it was done!

I am really proud of completing this mocroc model of my character, being able to make this and get it done before the deadline really makes me so happy. I'm so proud of myself for making this.
