Description
[Completed 7/23/2020]After spending much of this July tinkering with my DeviantArt account and organizing the content therein, I was determined to finish at least one drawing before the month ended. I'd wanted to try my hand at something more action-packed for a while; I usually do portraits and static poses, and all of my attempts at anything more thus far are much too embarrassing to post here.
Well then - if I could not draw walking people, much less running people, it would be better if I started with something much smaller in scope... so the ready stance taken just before a sword fight seemed a reasonable compromise. And if my sword-wielding subject so happened to be my friend's original character who I'd been meaning to draw seriously for months, it was that much better for me, right?
...Actually, no. It appeared I had forgotten just what 'going outside of one's comfort zone' entails. The posing seemed easy enough... until it was time to draw in his arms. Then when the arms finally made sense, something was off in the legs. And so the anatomy tug-of-war went on for some time. When that finally made sense, the hair and clothing were roughed in fairly quickly, and it was on to inking... where fabric physics (wrinkles and folds) became the issue of the day. Honestly, at point, I just took some references from Google and guessed. Finally, I moved on to the sword, which suddenly seemed unbalanced for some reason! Thankfully, Youtube had the answer I sought: an instructional video on proper long-sword wielding, as presented by [The Modern Rogue]. I'll provide a link, if you're interested?

All in all though, I'm pretty happy with the final result; considering the trouble gone through to get here, I think I've made some good progress. ^_^ Here's hoping the muscle memory sticks.
To cap things off here, my friend gave me the information necessary to give this young man a character bio! So with no further preamble:
"Captain Lorom L. Laviet is an unnervingly young naval officer born in the days of long-established human space exploration... and, at times, warfare. A prodigy in his field, the status afforded him has unfortunately given him something of an ego, but his excellent performance on missions, together with his genuine — if stubbornly impulsive — desire for the greater good, preserves his current rank... if barely.
"His life is a contradictory tale of carefully laid plans — his own carefully laid plans, mind — regularly swapped for on-the-fly judgment once his sense of justice is too strong to ignore. And while he would be happy to continue his maverick ways through the ranks, a looming evil on the horizon might soon change his tune...
"He is one of a duo in this story; his sister, a fellow captain, is the other major protagonist."
I've previously doodled Lorom here, if his face looks a bit familiar:
