Description
[Completed 7/6/2019]I'm contesting the 'colored' designation on this picture, since all I did was go over my original lines with a red marker. Seeing as I have no separate categories for 'modified, but not colored, exactly' though, it will have to do.
This quick portrait was finished the same evening I first brought home my new whiteboard - I was excited by the sheer size of it relative to my old one (more than double the space!) and was curious if I could now use the standard sized markers typically reserved for wall-sized boards, seeing as I'd scrounged up a few when I first began hunting for supplies. It's just a head-and-shoulders shot this time, as the very act of handling chisel-tips was outside my comfort zone already.
I learned a couple things from doodling this one, which in retrospect might be rather basic - but when you're starting from nothing, every bit of advice helps, you think?
First of all, a tool with bigger strokes generally creates bigger drawings; I think this was the first whiteboard drawing I made that was bigger than my hand. Secondly, the angle of the tool when it hits your medium can be very, very important; a lot of these lines are awkwardly swung and weighted since I did not know how to hold or properly manipulate this marker (I was used to fine tips, which have both a skinnier stem and require a bit more finger twisting to create nice strokes... on the bigger marker, it was very easy to overcompensate on the manipulation end). Finally, use color swatches before committing to the real deal! I uncapped the red marker and set to work immediately without checking if the colors would even match... I was already second-guessing partway through, but it was far too late to begin erasing anything by that point.
It was already late by the time I first began this picture, so I hurried through making it look at least somewhat polished, concluded I'd done enough experimentation for the day, and resolved to keep to my original fine-tip marker until I was more comfortable with handling my new board. Well, you'll know how that idea turned out, if you see the entry for my chronologically following piece, "Genteel.JPG"...
