Description Another work in progress shot, this time of a friend's original character. If you're here from the final product, you might see something off about the sword our hero is carrying... it's a katana! Now despite how potentially neat a katana might have been in a piece like this one, it is completely out of line with the references my friend gave me, as the sword in his reference art was clearly a straight-bladed, western-inspired weapon. Furthermore, the grip is weak and wrong - thanks for the tip, Youtube!

In the upper right, I'd briefly tested the strength of my colored markers before beginning the sketch - you'll want to make sure your dry-erase markers are fresh before committing to draw with them. Not too many (un-erased) warm ups this time around; I'd tried using the face references on hand much like "Sprawl.JPG", but they were coming out horribly. The answer, apparently was to draw from scratch, but keep in mind our hero's key facial features - his narrow face, his long nose, his wide eyes... Sometimes it helps to just step back and create something more raw.
