Description
[Completed 6/13/2020]An attempt to defy my usual habits of drawing "excuse furniture" - detailing a subject's pose first, then guessing through any necessary props in the background. This could, therefore, be the antithesis to "Slouch.JPG", which can be seen here:
To go about this, I drew in the armchair first - not following any specific model, as I've never drawn furniture seriously before-! It's just a bunch of rectangular prisms roughly assembled into a chair-like shape, finished off with rounded corners and tapered legs for that mid-century feel. Once the chair was loosely sketched in, the pose followed... probably the most unusual posing I've done to date, which is a neat milestone to hit! Why like this, I'll explain later.
The project did hit some roadblocks along the way; those chair-like prisms? Clearly not precise enough. I had to redo different aspects of the chair to fit my subject and not divide by zero, metaphorically speaking. In the end, the final armchair likely only kept 20-30 percent of the original sketch. Secondly, I'd never drawn a proper scarf in my life, and photo references did not help at all! It was only through a very helpful drawing reference (which I nearly copied line for line) that I made it here at all. The final hurdle was the subject's face - which, again, I will get to.
As for our subject himself: this is Agent Felix Hauville, a major character from the interactive fiction series, The Wayhaven Chronicles! Why does he look so young, and why he dressed so casually for a secret agent? Well he's, ah... special. Anyway, he has a reoccurring habit of incorrectly sitting in chairs, but especially sideways like this.
Now, the trouble with depicting Felix is that not only is The Wayhaven Chronicles a text-only literal novel, but the series' authoress, Mishka Jenkins, actively encourages her readers to imagine her characters however they please: that is, with features in line with what each individual considers to be the most beautiful or handsome... this means that though there may be bunches of fan art with Felix (and he's identifiable enough because of the few pointers Ms. Jenkins does give - he's a younger black fellow with a strong jawline and shapely lips, and he favors beanies, skinny jeans, and fashionable scarves), the individual faces can be wildly different!
So off to Tumblr it was to seek out and screenshot my own favorite Felix pieces, compile them into an MS Paint document, and figure out just how to combine them all into my own interpretation! That process took days and days, oof. But it all came together eventually!
Well, I should stop talking now, the document is getting a little long!
Credit for the scarf reference belongs to fellow Deviant Kibbitzer!
