so sometimes i set a timer for me so that "i will not think about any other project for this amount of time"
then i need to make sure i take a small break in between

A very good idea, time seems to pass at Warp Speeds when I get distracted from whatever I'm supposed to be doing. Wow, I'd love to see a hundred posts a day but you gotta sleep sometime sir!
Taking that small break is a very important thing. I heard that the USAF did a study one time that pretty much concluded that the mind stays focused as long as the backside doesn't fall asleep. That's why their training sessions last 55 minutes and then a 5 minute break out of the chair. That's a story that's just too good not to be true.
