Description So I got my new charcoal in the mail the other day, and I've been itching to use it. I haven't drawn a portrait in a while, and I thought it was worth a shot...you know, just to see if I could still draw them Anyway, the new charcoal totally sucks. The compressed stuff is a bit chalky, but I can work with it. The pencils are aweful, though. I never felt like I had control over them - they skipped over too much texture and overall were just a pain in the ass. Prismacolor charcoal = bad. I'll stick with General's charcoal. But that means I have to buy more > Maybe the prismacolor stuff will be better on untextured paper. I don't know...

Anyway, this one is from splucy [link] In spite of what you see here, she's an absolutely gorgeous girl (don't worry ladies, she lives too far away, so I'm still available ) There's something about this drawing that I can't pinpoint, but I don't really feel like it's as good as it could be. Any tips from you talented portrait artists? With all the black, this one is pretty much beyond repair, but I'd appreciate some insight as to what to watch out for the next time I do a portrait. Critique is certainly welcomed.

Be sure to check out splucy's gallery - she has a lot of great stock for all you young, budding artists.

There are some really good things going on in this one. First off I love your interpretation of the original. It's dark and bold. Very nice. Secondly, you've picked a nice composition. I love the scale of her face and how she fills the picture plane. And I really like the high contrast. I looks so good. My only suggestion would be to soften her up a bit. Her original is very sofft. You could represent her as she is in the photo by softening her cheek, nose, lips, and eye. Do some rubbing in those areas to subtly show her smoothness. She has beautiful skin, it'd be nice if you really showed that off. Overall, this is really good. And I always look forward to what you share with us.

You have a few good suggestions, and I took to them. I've softened a bit of the hard edges that I didn't really notice until you forced me to look at them. Not a whole lot, but more than what they were. I see a few more things I want to change, but hopefully I'll have a completed drawing and updated picture in the next couple of days.

Thanks a lot for the kind words!

I would sugest getting some regular compressed carcoal. And then some differnt vine carcoals, they give some nice soft greys. Also, I like to use white charcoal, black conte crayon, white conte. Its nice to be able to throw in some verry bright areas and tight edges.

To fix this you can allways rub some of it out. Make some areas a grey rather than black, then trow in whiter highlights. The semetry of the nose is aligned directly with the center of the drawing, it throws of the balance a bit.. As far as the rendering of the drawing, its imaculate. But its nice how it still has its suttleties, and some really nice thight edges in places, but not every where. You could blur the line of the lower cheek.

You are very good in using charcoal in the way to depict the darkness in this picture.

Well actually, it was the new type of charcoal that I bought and hate. Although I suspect if I had used my old stuff, it wouldn't have turned out the same.

Thanks for the compliment!

Hey - I'm thinking about drawing that beautiful statue that you found in the cemetary one of these days if that's cool with you? Probably not now, but sometime in the future.

Wow! Lovely drawing.

Trying my best to find something ... maybe the shadow from the lower lid on her left eye a little too large and the light line that outlines the lips a little too thin (too clearly delineated)?

Anyway - even if that's the case, it doesn't jar, or detract from the picture overall. Great job. So delicate for charcoal too.

Thanks for the fav and the advice, buddy. I'll see if I can get a few kinks out before I spray it.
