Description
Finally got around to finishing this one. School, ya know? I got some new charcoal in the mail, and I am anxious to use it, so I thought I'd finish this one before I tried something new.The original ( [link] ) is a beautiful picture by softreply (gallery [link] ). As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to draw it. It came out pretty decent. There are a few minor things I plan on going back to fix, but you can call this one complete. The original is for an anti-smoking contest, I believe, but I left out the cigarette because I didn't feel it was important in my drawing.
Charcoal, 11x14. The work in progress is in my scraps if you are interested, and I used a few new techniques to flesh out this one. Thoughts or suggestions?
A big thanks to softreply for (hopefully) allowing me to display my interpretation of her beautiful photo.

Ok, I was a little confused at first, because when you said 'thank you for helping me with the whole charcoal thing,' it kind of threw me off. I had to go back to figure out what you were talking about But now I know, and I've looked over your newest pictures, and they look great! Charcoal has really added depth to your images. I inspired you? Awesome! I've never heard that before.
I'm at school now, between classes, so I'll go back and comment when I have more time.
Thanks for stopping by!

lOVE it! I think the best is the "old" and "raw" feeling attach to it, so I think I don't have really nothing to suggest.... and when we do something with heart, there's nothing more to add or explain.
Good job

ohdear.
people like you, I cannot stand
you make it look SO easy! so
that when people like me attempt
realism, it is so hard.
nono. not really. this is absolutely gorgeous.
I look up to people like yourself and look forward
(hopefully) to improving and someday being even HaLF
as good. bah. anyway. lovely drawing, I really like the contrast
and that it's not an exact replica of the picture(those can be amazing, but kind of boring at times.). : D

Haha, you kind of make me feel like a celebrity You know who the people I look up to are? The ones who can draw from their imagination. I can't do that at all. Seriously, I'm not being modest - I cannot create my own characters, creatures, or things. I have to have a reference in front of me. That's why I've never really considered myself to be an artist. An artist creates...I just copy what I see.
But then again, it was Picasso who said, "Good artists copy; great artists steal."
You know, I think once you figure out a new technique that you really like - whether it's a way of shading skin, how to draw an eye, or even using a new medium - once you figure it out, everything else seems to just fall in place. You'll grow by leaps and bounds. Even now, I can still see improvement with every image as my technique evolves.
And I think this place has a lot to do with it, too. It's like, once you get that first drawing out that a lot of people seem to like, there's this urge inside you to do another one...a better one. You know what I mean?

ah, no problem. I was just looking at you page, I can't believe you only have 800+ pageviews.
anyway. I see what you mean about creating things on your own. but, imagination is something everyone is born with(I think some adults trade it for other things though sometimes. treat your imagination as you would your own soul, I say.) surely you can too. It's only a matter of practice, like you say.
Yes, I need some practice. The problem with me is that I can't control my style. XD Even if I'mm looking at a reference 100% of the time, my mind plays weird tricks with my hands, and I end up with something that looks 'inspired' rather than 'referenced'. Anyways, one thing I've learned from drawing all of my short life-so-far is that practice does make perfect.
I definitely know what you mean, you gather a lot of inspiration around this place, and a lot of technique presents itself. This place has been a huge help to me. You should see some of the stuff of mine from just a year ago. haha, ohdear.

Thanks a bunch! It does require a bit of discipline, but so do all art forms, and also anything that's worth doing. I'm a fan of charcoal because I feel the end product is so much stronger and richerper than graphite, or any other type of pencil.
I'm glad you like my drawing!
