Description I haven't decided if I like this drawing or not. What do you guys think? Maybe I need to try a new medium...or if I wasn't so broke, I'd use something besides the watercolor paper I have stockpiled. Anyway, it looks a lot better on paper than it does on the screen, so too bad for you

Charcoal, 11x14.

The seagull floating on the water was a nice touch. See far right side of glass

Really neat. The photorealism bit is tres cool. It looks a bit more viscous than water, but that's a plus.

If you're using watercolor stock, and are looking for smoothness, try using fixative or aerosol hairspray in large quantities. Eventually it will give the surface something of a smoother finish. And it makes newsprint a lot more fun, especially if you have some white chalk

Huh. That's a pretty neat idea - and just crazy enough to work I'll definately try that when I get some more fixative. Thanks for the tip and the fav!

You did an excellent job in depicting the form of water in this drawing as it looks reasonably and convincingly realistic.

I appreciate it!

I really like your signature. Who said that?

I came up with the saying "History is 99.9% Notoriety" (although there are times when I would doubt whether the saying was true or not, until I finally removed it, and then came you praise for it...)

But then considering how a majority of events in history, (including those mentioned in the local news such as murders, robberies, etc.), some of the words have some truth in them...

I think it's a brilliant thought, and probably more true than you give credit to.

thanks for the update, so glad you did. neways, its beautiful! i personally don't like this drawing...i LOVE it! its lovely and reminds me of imaginee's glass of water. the mere fact that you were able to put it down so swiftly on watercolor paper is amazing cuz things turn out very...grainy and un-smooth. awesome work!

I think it's excellent. I haven't tried to draw on watercolor paper for years.. too much texture. And if it looks better in person, that's saying something because the screne shot is impressive. Also, if you'd like to try a new medium and you happen to have lots of watercolor paper, why don't you paint watercolors? It might be fun, you never know.

hawkke In reply to Ahsatan2 [2006-08-07 05:09:30 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I love getting complimented It always looks better on paper for me, because I don't have a scanner, so I'm taking photos of what I draw. But my monitor is too dark and I have trouble finding a proper balance of contrast. It's kind of hard for me to judge since I have no idea what it looks like on somebody else's monitor.

As far as the watercolor paper goes - you're right. The textures make it hard to draw something with a smooth finish. I have some newsprint, but, well, it's newsprint So that's not an option. What would you recommend for a smooth drawing surface? Something cheap, mind you

I've been painting a little, but I have a terrible sense of color. I only think of things in black and white, so that's why I like charcoal so much. But I've thought about painting, using only black and white watercolors. It might make for some interesting pictures.

I find that good brands of paper are bienfang, and swarthmore. I don't think they're horribly expensive. If you want something really smooth, go for cardstock, I think you can buy it by the sheet. But that might be too smooth (good for pen and ink).. Don't be afraid of color, just play with it, stick to the primaries if nothing else, you'll be fine.

I'll keep those in mind the next time I get some money. My birthday's coming up, maybe somebody will buy some paper for me? hehe

Give them the brand names or they won't know what to get.
