I just started play the Metal Gear Solid series, and I just started play Sons of Liberty. I really like Raiden, it's so sad what hapens to him and what he goes through. He's a true hero and badass.

Forgot to say, I also like that you changed his hair. In the games it's way too light and perfect.

I must be honest about the hair. The only reason it's changed is because at the time (2010) I was quite new at digital painting and hadn't worked out how to light the hair. That's why it's quite darker in comparison to Raiden's light hair. But hey it worked out in my favour! haha

This is done really really well, not only the craft of the image, but also the inherent realism.
Despite his game portrayal this is what he MUST look like. His face in MGR looks perfect, powder smooth, and model perfect.... but you KNOW that he must be covered in scars everywhere, from a life time of fighting. From shrapnel and stray cuts. He must be REALLY REALLY grimy, from the blood, sweat and dirt ob battle.
In the game, his face scars are perfect straight lines. But we ALL know that's not how scars work, maybe superficial scratches, but not deep surgical scars. Scars bubble up, and pull the surrounding skin askew in unnatrual ways. Even straight surgical scars leave ragged edges of too smooth skin. The patriots would not have been so kind.... even if they tried, skin does not heal in angels and degrees. The cruel reality is that Raiden's scars to the bone must be discolored, ragged and unsettling, a GREAT touch in this pic where the uneven pull of healed skin, pulls his nose slightly askew.
His hair too is limp and matted, in the way that it would be, saturated with the dust and grime of the battlefield, caked with blood and gunpowder residue.
These are all little realistic details sacrificed in the name of character design.
This is great image in that it touches on something really integral to the game, in that Raiden repeatedly mentions his social integration issues and the obvious nature of his artificial skin. But to us, watching the cutscenes, it really isn't obvious.... there's an element of unreliability to these cinematic scenes, such that objects on screen many be more polished and perfect and canonically fictionalized than they appear.

Thank you! I am glad you picked up on the realism of this painting. I am always annoyed at how beautiful character concepts look and then how different it is to the final rendering we see in games. So many beautiful details missed out. And for what? I understand that he probably needs to look appealing and sexy but then its things like that that really let down his character design. A scar or two really adds character to his role (pardon the pun and overuse of the word 'character') All his smooth face is telling me is that this guy cares more about his appearance than getting the job done. It makes him look weaker than he really is.

Lol. You know my style by now. If there's no scars then he hasn't worked hard enough.
But in all seriousness someone wielding a high frequency blade like his and fighting various powerful enemies is bound to receive a scar or two for his troubles. His smooth silky face isn't realistic. Even for someone as skilled as him.

I totally agree with you. He's fighting with blade against enemies armed with blades, knives and guns. Thousands of times he was "scratched" in his face but it's still smooth. They should add him few scars or even some burns.

It's probably what you said before. The ladies won't like him if he's got so many scars. Raiden's always had a very smooth and perfect face.

Too smooth and too perfect. I don't know maybe I'm different but am I the only girl for who more important is what kind of man the protagonist is than how he looks like? (Obviously I'm because most girls like young Ezio and I like old Ezio lol).

I think if you're looking at how good looking a character is you're not in it for the right reasons. From a guy's perspective I'm more intrigued by a female character's story than the way she looks. It's the storyline that's the the biggest selling point for me. You get that right and I'm not too fussed about other things. I can easily compromise them.
