Passie had taken a few weeks to recover from her travel over to Featherstone. We were surprised by how fast she seemed to fit in with the other horses, making friends where ever she went and settling into her stall as if it had been hers all along. We took her out for a few walks over the past couple of days so she could discover the grounds that were now her home. After a few days in and out of the meadow, settling into her stall every night, we decided that the time had come to see if she was ready for a bit of work. She was already saddle broken, known to a bridle and a rider, but we knew she was still young and needed to learn and adjust to things, so Darren started off with just seeing how things went, not asking too much of her.
What he got was way more, though. She followed his hand and stepped around the arena as if it was hers and hers only. Still a bit hesitant in the corners, looking for sand gnomes, but Darren's steady hand and calm demeanor seemed to be just what she needed. He loosened the reins at the end of the training and let Passie stretch, petting her broad neck with a smile. ''You're a good girl,'' he said soothingly, his voice sweet and soft. It was not often he could be seen as a caring, sweet person. He usually was a bit hardened, a shell covering everything that wasn't manly and bold. It were mares like these though that seemed to break right through his walls and into his heart. It wasn't for nothing that he picked her right out of all the others. He knew she was a diamond, maybe one that still needed polishing, but he knew she would be one of their pride and joy if you just gave her the right tools and the time. Time was everything, after all.
"Next time we can even take Micah with us on a walk,'' he chattered to her, as he eyed the barn not far from the arena. His husky Ranger usually darted around the arena or laid at the other side of the fence watching his owner as he trained, but he'd commanded him to stay in the barn for as long as he worked with Passie. He didn't know how she would react on a big, black and white dog eyeing her from the side and he didn't want to make her more anxious than she already might be. Now that he knew she was rest and peace itself, he knew she would probably not mind Ranger being near them. ''I think you will like her too - she has the same calmness as me, y'know. Even though you might not think that seeing her. She has a resting grumpy face - don't mind her,'' he chuckled while he set her to a halt in the middle of the arena and dismounted, so he could take her back to the barn.
