Description A fifth generation jet fighter of my own design.  Its been somewhat influenced by the Su-47 Berkut but with some pretty obvious differences.

Your line work is very Alex Toth/Hanna Barbarra. I like it.

You seem to have different styles for different genres. Your aircraft aft feels very Alex Toth, as I said. Your Marvel art is reminiscent of J Scott Campbell in many ways, and your Transformers art is mangaesque.

Sorry for such a late reply.  In general, I feel my art has been gradually heading in the direction of a more mangaesque style.  I'm a fan of both of those artists, but the ones who've influenced me the most, and who's styles I've tried to imitate in some way or other are the likes of Geoff Senior and Lee Sullivan, simply because I've been following their Transfomers comic art since I was a kid.

Definitely an interesting design with some merit. While high speed performance would be limited due to the forward swept wings and small engines, the low speed characteristics should allow for high angle of attack pitch authority. Unfortunately, this is offset by the very small elevators. Additionally, the vertical tail is way too small to have any substantial effectiveness. Even then, you'd want two tail fins that are canted outward to take advantage of the vortexes generated by the strakes, which would allow for better yaw authority during high AoA situations. Engine housing should be increased in size somewhat to allow for larger engines. I would not say this is a fifth gen aircraft though. Its radar cross section is quite significant, especially with only one tail fin. But it could definitely be refined into a competent 4.5 generation aircraft that specializes in the multirole mission.

Wow! Thanks for such an in-depth analysis on my design.  I actually just got the idea in head and put it on paper thinking it would look cool.  I never really thought about any of science behind the design.

Well, I thought it looked interesting so I thought I'd critique it.

Haha, well its good to know it flies and could be of use for certain roles.

Could you do a character profile on a G1 styled movie 1-2 Optimus Prime? Also in case you never noticed (no offence) he actually DOES have the grill in his chest in the first 2 movies, just watch the "Arrival To Earth" scene on YouTube from the first movie and you'll see what I mean

Hi, yeah maybe one day, but not in anytime in the near future as I'm quite busy with quite a few projects and ideas waiting to be started.

I also notice a strong F/A-18 influence in this design.  I'm going to have to look up the Su-47.  I had never heard of it until you mentioned it here.

This also looks similar to a space fighter that is running (flying?) through my mind.

Its funny, I didn't intend it to look anything like an F-18 to start with but the F-18 feel seemed to just grow on it as I was drawing it.

Haha, which space fighter?

In a story I uploaded to my FA, DA and SF pages titled "Marooned on Tashoo", the main character is a fighter pilot for the Interstellar Terran Navy.  I had been considering what a space fighter with atmospheric capabilities would look like.  As I thought about it, it started looking similar to this. The big difference between your design and what I was envisioning is that the wings, other than the control surfaces, would have solar panels and the bottom of the ship would have ultra-lightweight re-entry tiles.  (Meaning extremely thin and water (or other coolant) piping to allow the heat of re-entry to readily dissipate.

Ah cool, sounds like a really interesting and well thought out design.  You should draw it.

I would except for one intsy, wintsy little problem.  I'm no artist.  I can describe almost anything but draw it?  Not if you held a 20 mm howitzer to my head.  No artistic talent in this body.  Not even a little bit.  LOL.

Oh dear   Well it definitely sounds like a cool idea.  Although the re-entry tiles might be a bit fragile when it comes to taking enemy fire.  Well, if they're anything like what are used on existing space shuttles.

That's true.  That's one aspect of my fancied space fighter, that I have, as yet, not figured out how to compensate for.  Of course, the re-entry tiles could be made out of a substance, man-made of course, that is both stronger than steel, lighter than aluminum and as heat resistant as asbestos.  The same would have to be true of the solar panel on the upper side of the craft.

Of course there's plenty of possibilities to get round it such as stronger materials.  Still a great idea

Always the possibility of these things being invented in the future.  That's why my story is set 400 years in the future.

Yeah, that leaves plenty of time.  Plus the theory's already there.

Or will it be a Transformer?!

Thanks.  I did draw it just as a jet design, but I'm starting to get ideas to make an original Transformer character.  Nothing concrete as yet though.
