Description A recently finished nordic inspired knife. The blade is my own 120 layered damascus, as always.
And the handle is some fancy cherry.

Might I ask how you get that particular pattern? I would assume you twist the billet, but by how much? Half a turn, a full turn or more?
I like that you can still make out the actual layering and it's not just a pattern effect.

No, there are no twisting here. This is a simple random pattern. This is what you get if you forge it by hand. The hammer blows directions and strength are also random, because the hand hammer doesn't have a fixed course as an airhammer and I also loose strength and stamina as the forging goes on. A machine doesn't experience fatigue so it's blows come are always same, in the same angle with the same strengthΒ

Gotcha.
Thanks for the reply. I've been doing some blacksmithing a while now and I want to have a go at making some pattern welded steel.

I only just realized, you must have a power hammer, ya? Couldn't imagine the size of your arms if you hand forge all these goddamn damascus billets!

Shit, son! I keep getting tennis elbow in my right arm, and forearm splints and shit. I can't go a 3 hours of hammering without hurting myself. I workout fairly often, and I practice the "Ancient Sling", which also puts a lot of torque on the arm. All of the abuse I put on my arm in a week I just can't avoid injury.

Have you tried to strengthen your joints with some vitamins and glucosamine? It worked well for me

Well it's more the tendons in my arm. Not the joint of my elbow, more like the "crook", the upper forearm. But I'll look into it ;D
