It's pretty simple. The watermelon farmers in Japan grow the seeds in glass containers, so when they grow to their full size, they assume the shape of the container they're in.
To the current exchange rate, these watermelons cost at least $100 US.
Hell, from what I heard and seen, they've made PYRAMID shaped melons.

This is so tight! I read about these in a kid's magazine. The Japanese would grow watermelons in a square container and could sell for hundreds.

Yeah I've seen the same thing done with pumpkins, they gave them actual faces by growing them in pots with the face shape or something. I forget exactly how they did it.
