One of my colleagues has a nephew who's really into Doctor Who and, having seen my cartoon of Jon Pertwee's incarnation, asked if I'd be willing to design a custom birthday card for his tenth birthday. Since I haven't been drawing at all for well over a year, I jumped at the excuse... and promptly procrastinated until very nearly the last minute. I learned that his particular favourite was the Matt Smith incarnation (also one of my favourites from New Who), who I thought would be a lot of fun to draw, as he was so dynamic in the role. As it turned out, I spent well over a month trying to decide how I wanted him posed - looking at all kinds of promo images and pictures of Matt Smith larking around - only to end up rushing through a 'waist up only' version based on a promo shot, because I just couldn't find the 'right' pose for what I wanted to achieve. Also, Matt Smith turned out to be really difficult to draw - I tend to emphasise eyes, but his are fairly sunken, and his eyebrows have a habit of disappearing in photos... I'm not 100% happy with it, but at least it's recognisable... I think...

My colleague was delighted with the end result, so I hope her nephew likes it as well - if nothing else, it'll be unique!

The finished version of the front also included a TARDIS in the background and a simple 'Happy Birthday' message at the top but, while I may print another copy of the finished card and post a photo here, I'm not going to post the complete image.
