The more I draw this mare the cuter she gets xD Oh, Dolly.Horse: FEC Doe Eyed Doll
Rider: Samantha Hendricks
Previous: The Storm Clears
Next: Ain't No Rest for the Wicked
It was absolutely no secret that Samantha Hendricks had not been at Fallbrooke for long.
She watched as the other staff and riders lounged around the barn, chit chatting away. She would sometimes overhear part of the conversations, but often did not know who or what they were referring to.
Many times they were talking about an old horse who had been at the barn before, or a person who was no longer around. Being the only person who was around the barn on a regular basis who had not been there for a long time often times made her feel very left out of the loop.
Being left in charge of Dolly's training had helped. As a staff member and aspiring trainer, it made her feel like someone believed in her abilities. Kipcha had even told her that if she was successful with Dolly, she'd slowly add more horses to her work list.
The thought made her feel excited, and Dolly pricked her ears up.
Sam had the mare on the cross ties outside her stall, delicately taking a curry comb to her mud-caked coat. Sam had only been working with Dolly for a few weeks, but she had already fallen head over heels for the unique mare.
She was extremely eager to please, however she was also quick to get frustrated when she didn't understand something. Sam had received a few good bucks in the short time they'd been together.
She went about preparing the young mare for her training session with a relaxed manner. Despite the late December date, the temperatures had been obscenely mild. Large patches of grass outside were still a vibrant green, and some flies still buzzed about, much to the horses' disliking.
Sam's ride on Dolly went smoothly. She got the mare nice and round for the first time, however Dolly grabbed the reins and tried to yank them out of Sam's hands. She wasn't usually this argumentative, so Sam concluded that the mild weather had her feeling her oats.
She was leading a sweaty Dolly back towards the barn when she heard someone yelling from the barn office. She quietly removed the mare's bridle, re-haltered her, and cross-tied her. She tip-toed over to the office door and listened. She felt guilty about eavesdropping, but being curious by nature she couldn't help herself.
Dolly started pawing the ground, and Sam motioned for her to stop.
"What the hell do you mean he got out for good behavior? That asshole got ten years in prison!" Kipcha screamed, and Sam could hear the sound of something hitting the floor.
"That's exactly what I said. He's only four years into his sentence. How do you let someone out of prison on good behavior knowing what he did." As usual, even when he was angry Hadrian's voice had a softness to it. It was usually calming, but now it made him sound even angrier. Sam briefly wondered why Hadrian had come all the way to Fallbrooke from River Valley when he could have simply skyped Kipcha.
"Did you tell Jamie?" Kipcha asked, quieter now.
"Of course not. She has enough to worry about. I highly doubt he could find his way over to River Valley without us noticing, however I'm worried about this place. He knows where you are, and he probably still thinks Jamie is here, especially since some of her horses are here.
Sam heard Kipcha sigh. "So what do we do?"
"I'm going to take care of him."
It was silent for all of three seconds.
"ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND?" Kipcha screamed for the second time. "If you end up in jail Jamie will murder you herself! You're pretty much her only managerial help on that island of hers."
"Someone has to do something about Daemon. I will not let him hurt Jamie again."
"Oh my god. Hadrian...are you in love with Jamie?" Kipcha asked.
"Shut up." he snapped, yanking the door to the office open and coming face to face with Sam, who could feel her heart in her throat.
"Oh my god Hadrian I am so sorry! I didn't mean to eavesdrop, but you guys were being so loud I was afraid something terrible had happened."
He looked angry, but thankfully it wasn't at her. "No, Sammy. It's actually a good thing. How much did you hear?"
She gulped, but felt a bit relieved. "Something about someone getting out of jail early and coming after Fallbrooke or Jamie? Or both?"
Hadrian nodded. "Good. Kip, fill her in. You're going to need everyone to know what's going on. I have a bad feeling about this."
He stormed down the barn isle and right by Dolly, who scooted her butt away from him as he walked by. She looked over at Sam as if to say 'what the hell is his problem?'
Sam finished putting Dolly away and met Kipcha in her office to hear the full story. She was glad to finally be involved in something on the inside, however she had a bad feeling that something big was about to go down.
