Description Alright, I did another little animation test.

I planned to use the very character concept that I did recently, but when I started animating I realized how unbelievably tedious it was going to be.
So, simple as it is, that design needs to be simplified a LOT for the animation I am planning to do.
Here you see a rough design which was done on-the-fly.

Far from being perfect or any spectacular. It's still wonky and lacks some nice extreme motion archs. Just a few too many frames also...

Only coloring all the frames cost over 1 hour, this is really laborious. But still, animation is super fun and rewarding.
Plus, great practice with dynamic figure drawing.

Plastic Animation Paper 4 for the animation, SAI (thx to Algenpfleger for advertising it ) for drawing the clean frames, PS7 for coloring them, After FX for compositing and Flash for creating the final output file

sorry, the file is rather big - pls wait for it to load...
I'd like to hear your thoughts!

Cyborg-Warriors only weakness:
Giant Ostrich Eggs.

No, seriously; very fluid movements, nice!
Keep on going! And....

.....dodge!

Pretty fluid man, really works. I think the only thing is add another frame for when he turns back around to start running again, the only point it seems to jump.

I believe the business standard for animation is actually using a 3d model and working from there using cel shading. At least that's what I've heard, could be wrong, but might be worth looking into.

I know Evangelion was all animated by hand, but most cartoons nowadays seem to use cel shaded 3d.

yeah, well, that is the sad thing! 3D is taking over everything, the really good stuff has all already been made. :/

this is really good man, I could tell it wasnt finished but its nice to see your doing it the "proper way" drawing it frame by frame I mean. non of this "create motion tween" really great stuff I think with animation you will have to keep it cartoon-like as realistic animation is real tough to do

Hideyoshi In reply to sangheili117 [2008-07-13 12:39:50 +0000 UTC]

cartoonish and realistic animation still share the same principals. It's just the drawing style that differs...
THanks!

yea, like i always fave your speedpaints, and youv inspire me a lot to do digital paintings.
but for this animation, honestly...
line of action is off. flow is off. timing is off.
i know its hard. but there's still a line between good stills ang a good animated movements.
i want you to do better than this master.

Hideyoshi In reply to artauxeo [2008-07-08 16:58:50 +0000 UTC]

haha, yeahyeah - it surely needs more work! I guess I will only do lineart animation, rough one, to get it all right before I get into coloring...

artauxeo In reply to Hideyoshi [2008-07-09 03:34:51 +0000 UTC]

ryt, do ruffest roughs. animation will get so limited if your focusin on details and colors.
how i wish glenn kean has his own dA page, so we could learn a lot from him.
well, goodluck with the animation stuff master.

Awesome test man

But I was wondering.. If you were going into animating things and face the trouble of learning traditionally, why not jump right into learning 3d animation instead? The learning and catching up on the 3D stuff's probably more tedious than learning 2Dmation, but I'm guessing it's a lot more easier at the end when you've learned everything there is to learn about 3D... You know, rather than drawing something frame by frame?

That being said...I still love 2D animation though (Japanese stuff). I don't think 3D's ever gonna surpass it's "rawness". I was just wondering.

Hideyoshi In reply to jbballaran [2008-07-08 16:23:41 +0000 UTC]

well, you answered the question all by yourself!
I just prefer 2D animation to the look of 3D stuff. I am talking japanese anime, right. The hand-drawn work is more impressive to me because it involves more skill I think...

Yep. Thought so. Well, hope to see a short from you someday. I'm sure it's gonna be cool.

artauxeo In reply to Hideyoshi [2008-07-08 16:41:47 +0000 UTC]

i agree to that sir. 3d animation is just like puppetry(there are mo-caps). its still best to see handrawn figures or character comes to life.

haha WOW you colored it!
NOW u know how tedious it is to do handdrawn animation in color
i think for your sake you should do line drawing animation.... u'll enjoy it more >_>

as for the animation itself.. i think the end of the jump when he rebounce and recover from the jump can be somewhat longer... it is currently too short and feels werid

ITS THE CROTCH MAN!~~ haha
await more animation from you

Hideyoshi In reply to JerryCai [2008-07-08 15:11:43 +0000 UTC]

haha, totally! TEDIOUS as hell!
But if I wanna do that little animated sequence, I need to color everything even better AND add good backgrounds etc.!
Thanks for the crits, very much agreed! Little more follow throughs would have worked fine!

This is really good, you don't give yourself enough credit. Animation is really tough, especially animating humans and you did a really good job here.

If I had to crit I would say there is maybe something wrong with the final running steps he takes? Hard to say what exactly - I'm no expert. I'd say it looks a little stiff (although he is in armour). But all in all it looks really great!

No problem dude. I think you're doing just fine so far.

I might apply for an intern for an animation studio myself sometime in the Fall. I don't have animation skills, but the studio actually holds classes so animators can teach you some techniques. They select very few people, so I don't know if I'll get with them. I did have a good talk with some of the fellas that work there though, so who knows.
