Tasha’s expression fell as she saw the death glares exchanged between Ronja and Lumi. The short time away didn’t seem to serve its purpose of mending relations between the two and they still seemd to be holding onto their feud. Childish. She thought to herself, attempting to hide the heartbreak of friends that were no longer getting along because of harsh words said in the heat of the moment. Ronja was quite big at this point and she almost threatened to knock Lumi off the path despite being a fair bit shorter than him.
Kha and Vilja held themselves shortly behind Tasha as they chattered about the usual things. We took down an albino bear recently. Kha stated proudly, seemingly extending her own hunting party’s successes as her own. Yes, it was mine! Tasha decided to pitch in after stopping to investigate some of the purple flowers that grew over the arch of a fallen tree. She felt a beam of joy surge through her chest at how fondly Kha had spoken of her hunting accomplishments. Albino bears are difficult to come by and even more so to take down! Especially with such little experience. Kha was still grinning from ear to ear at Tasha, seemingly not registering that her words might be a bit consdescending as Tasha’s ears dropped.
Ronja’s ears pered to the sound of the talk about the most recent hunt. Admittedly, she’d not been allowed on any in the further stage of her pregnancy and she longed to get back into the swing of things. She decided to not let this get her down, however, as she instead focused on the positive. The weather had been kind to them save for a few showers of rain and the forest held a comforting scent of damp grass and growing life. Oddly fitting. She thought to herself, nudging by her growing belly with a fondness only an expecting mother seemed to carry. Lumi, on the other hand, seemed concerned as he saw the female acting oddly. Ronja usually wasn’t overly maternal or ‘soft’ and he found a sense of unease wash over him as he simply observed. Maybe she’s going crazy. He narrowed his eyes, trying to box in the behaviour and coming to the conclusion that it was the same type that his own mate had shown during her many litters. He should be used to this by now but it was strange seeing it in such a head strong and rash leader.
I wonder when we’re heading out next. Kha mused, her eyes hopeful as they turned towards Ronja. Judging by the ears she seemed to be eaves dropping partially into the conversation and she found this was the best time to ask, indirectly, about the next hunt. Soon. Ronja answered with a broad grin. Just have to unload all these pups first! She chuckled in amusement, seeing the mild look of horror crossing Vilja and Tasha’s face. The van gogh female had been rather excited about new hunts, even if her post didn’t allow her to and the hunting party was mainly filled with trainees, and she most definitely wasn’t accustomed to Ronja speaking directly to them. Instead she was stuck in utter awe at the scenario and silenced by the few words she spoke.
Kha nodded in agreement as she beamed with delight. She would never dream of usurping Ronja but the kind way she was spoken to almost made her feel like an equal. She had worked hard for this position and it seems like the fruits of her labour were finally starting to ripen as she was seen as capable of her job. She held an extra bounce in her step from the praise and couldn’t stop grinning from ear to ear like an oversized puppy. Lumi noticed this and felt a twinge of annoyance in his chest. Ronja wasn’t’ ‘all that’ and, even as their alpha female, he found her to be less than capable. These dark thoughts continued to brew as his eyes lingered on both Tasha and Vilja. They seemed to almost fear Ronja, although Lumi chalked that down to them mimicking Kha’s behaviour, but they also had a strange sense of friendliness towards is sister. He could see on them that they held some fear for his rank as well, even if he was a council member rather than an actual leader, and he revelled in it slightly. This respect, and partial fear, would be key to protecting his family against all in the pack that would do them harm. In a way he missed Harley as she was adept at sorting out situations and fixing them as well, Ronja wasn’t as capable with such strife but she was gradually learning from her surroundings. Lumi had to give her some credit for growing from the arrogant pup he had once known to the rank of alpha female, even if he hadn’t voted for her and felt a little annoyed that they hadn’t waited for her to mature a bit more. But, the majority of the council’s vote had gone to Ronja in the wake of the former alphas retiring from their post and he had to respect that.
As he turned is gaze towards the flowers and the fallen log blockading the path that he had to move to allow Ronja and the rest to pass, he contemplated the council’s decision. What did they see in her? Was his mind clouded with his own grudges? He hadn’t put himself down as an overly emotional tokota but he was starting to reconsider this view on himself.
Tasha tilted her head towards Vilja as they followed close behind Kha instead. They were feeling a bit more shy than usual due to the direct addressing, with no frills attached, by Ronja and having her own accomplishments acknowledged filled Tasha with a sense of belonging and joy. She’d definitely have to tell Valentina when she got back about the praise. She’d be so jealous.
The rest of the patrol seemed to go without a hitch as Kha silently planned the next hunt. Yes, she’d be bringing out some of the trainees and it would be a nice break from the many, many patrols. Not that she was particularly salty about having to do them, they were essential and she loved getting out in nature without the intent to hunt for food. She stopped for a brief moment to allow Tasha and Vilja to pass as she took in a deep breath from her surroundings. Even if her totem did not agree with this fully she felt at one with the world around her. She didn’t feel the need to analyse every detail but allowed the luxury of simple being. She was broken out of this trance as she felt that Lumi had returned from Ronja’s side and was now shoving his little sister down the road in an attempt to make her catch up. Come on, Kha-booty. We’ve got work to do, you can’t sleep on the job. He teased despite Kha’s protests. I told you not to call me that! She whined softly as she dug her heels in, she was simply met with a shake of her head, however, she was soon dragged along by the tail by the insistent male. Come on, you looove patrols. He grinned in a playful manner, soon being knocked over by the brawny female as Ronja ,Vilja and Tasha waited patiently for the siblings to sort out their differences with amused faces.
