Cave lion, to be exact I really enjoyed painting this commission for Part of the point was to homage the famous cave lion painting by Heinrich Harder of the same animal, and in fact, the idea I was given was to revisit the reindeer's kill site, but months later, during the spring. The difference here is that I painted the lion trying to approach the appearance now suggested for the species by both cave paintings and other artwork, and the frozen cubs found in Siberia. Although closely related to modern lions, cave lions were a separate kind of big cat, with different characteristics, including a somewhat different color scheme, large paws probably to walk and run on snow more easily, like a lynx, a more robust build, and facial markings similar to a cheetah's (also found in some lions and leopards but less evident perhaps).
Special thanks to who was kind enough to provide me with info and references on the subject

Well it's a complicated subject. I suppose it depends on what constitutes a mane for you. When we speak of manes in modern lions we imagine something big and spectacular that covers the neck, chest, lower abdomen... but not all modern lions have big full manes, many have more discrete versions of it, and some populations lack a mane completely or almost completely. So that alone tells us that there may also have been variation among cave lions, if they were anything like modern lions, and that some populations may have had more significant manes than others.

That being said, they didn´t HAVE to. They were seemingly a separate species from today's lion, and their social structure may have been different. From what I've read, they probably weren´t living in big prides, and they may even have been mostly solitary, like most cats are.
If so, then maybe there was no need for a mane (which has largely a social function in modern lions). Maybe the discrete ruff and dorsal crest we see in some cave portrayals of cave lions is as far as they went- not unlike the ruff of a male tiger.

American lions are even more mysterious as we don´t have ancient art depicting them as far as I know.

Oh this is nice. I love the realistic face and the way that the Cave Lion looks like it has weight and power to its body.

They were apparently more robust than modern day lions, and modern lions are nothing to scoff at! :3

Fantastic! I was looking forward to seeing this,
Love the appearance, he looks like what I pictured a cave lion to look, majesthicc, muscular and regal, the whole deal. really not much to say other than him being gorgeous.
Also nais idea from your client regarding Harder's iconic piece, visiting the kill again in spring.

Also thank you for the shoutout

So what's the latest word on cave lions? Were they a species or a subspecies or what?

Probably a distinct species based on what we know, there's no evidence for gene flow with Panthera leo based on the most recent genomic evidence  www.pnas.org/content/early/202…
