I think u could just change it either by using:
Hue (located at the Filter/ or if u already have a shortcutkey for it)
or perhaps using the Blend Mode "Color"~

I know your comment is a bit old but if you're still having issues with the brush being black and white you have to uncheck the "Apply Foreground Color" box in the brush's settings c: learned that today when looking at instructions from other brushes
