One of the iconic animals of planet expendable, this is animal is often made into plush toys and actions figures for the privileged children of the now dying earth.

The hydra is a slick skin that feeds upon the smaller forms of phyto-ooze. It's usually will rip the bubble open with it's horns and suck up the planet matter within. However a pregnant female will find a phyto-ooze small enough to fit her entire mouth around and then pop it with her teeth. This allows her to assimilate the gas in the phyto-ooze into her own gas sacks. (a wounded hydra will also do this to replace any gas lost in a fight or hunt) A female will develop a egg case internally for 7-8 week which she will then lay in the pairs roost. there are six eggs in a case three on each side and a central tube that runs up the middle. this tube is filled with gases from the mothers sacs which will be absorbed by the embryo as it needs it. Young hydra reach there full size of 4 feet in 3 earth years, when the young reach a size of 2 1/2 ft the parents chase them off, while they continue to mate for life. In order for the young males to win a mate they must fight with other males, they chases each other and viciously make strike at the other's tail membrane and gas sacs with it's claws and horns. The competition ends when one falls to the ground and is no longer able to fly. It's is then usually eaten by an opportunistic scavenger. the two appendages by it's neck are used in the nymph stage of it's development to harvest airborne plankton as they grow older these appendages shrink and are used to sense the air for the most fertile areas of phyto-ooze.

They contain an extremely light mixture of gases that allow the hydra to float. Planet expendable has an extremely dense atmosphere that many animals on the planet take advantage of by casting their larvae into the atmosphere or by floating in it. In the hydras case it uses both methods. Infact the two appendages by it's neck are used in the nymph stage of it's development to harvest airborne plankton.
