I played around with doing closer crops in those macro pictures for two hours yesterday. I always had the feeling that it would look better with a closer crop - but actually not in one picture I kept the close crop. I think what I like about the large crop is the complexity of the background.

Just had a quick play with a download and I have to agree. You do loose something with the close crop, so a good call.
