Featuring Samuel Hunt 284——
It had been several days since the first incident with the bones. Samuel had not attempted to mess around with it again. The bones felt like a ton of bricks in his waist bag, constantly conscious of their presence. It wasn’t clear to most around him due to his usually stoic nature, but there was a constant anxiety.
Someone was going to catch him, he thought. Something was going to happen to expose him. Dark magic?! Adam Hunt’s son? He was always going to be trouble wasn’t he? Samuel went about his days carrying this weight, he swore it caused his shoulders to ache. And no one was any the wiser.
Well, no one but one.
“What’s on your mind Samuel?” the gruff, deep voice asked, pulling Samuel out of the fog that was his mind at the moment. He looks up from what he had been doing, knife in hand and wood in the other. Small shavings of wood littered the ground around him. “You’ve been stiff lately. Something is bothering you?” the man continues. Samuel looks back down at the wooden horse he had been whittling.
“It’s nothing.” he grunts, another pass of the knife over the wood curling a large thin slice of wood until it too falls to the floor.
His father lowers himself to the ground next to him with a small groan, body sore from years of manual labor.
“Are you sure? Samuel, you know I love you, you can tell me anything.” he states.
Samuel is skeptical. This wasn't some run of the mill secret. It was magic. Dark magic at that. If he was found out he’d be thrown out of town. His father too for raising such a disgraceful son! Samuel sighs and places the knife down, staring at his handiwork. It looked super weird, the head was too big. He frowns.
“Samuel.” he can feel a hand on his shoulder. The weight of the bones in his bag suddenly feel like it’s going to drag him to earth’s core. “Just know you can confide in me”
“I’m gay!” he sputters, surprised. There’s a silence that draws out between them and Samuel lets out a small breath. No this was good, a secret that would pull attention away from this new magic he had discovered.
“Oh.” Adam said, shocked but not particularly upset “Is that all?” Samuel stares at his feet. “My son. I love you.” he can feel himself being pulled into a hug, still feeling numb. “No matter what, you are my son and I love you, alright?” He sits in the hug a long moment before nodding. Eventually, the two part, and his father gets up, ruffling his hair. “You still seem stiff, i'm sorry for forcing that out of you, when you are ready, we can talk alright?”
Samuel nods and gets up as well. “I need to go think in my room.” he eventually says. His father just nods.
“Take some time, just know I'm here for you, I know that must have been a huge secret. Take the day off, I don't need much help today anyway,” Samuel picks up the scuffed wooden horse and heads for his bedroom, boots crunching on the mats made of woven straw.
He can finally let out a breath, the bones still weighing heavy on him he concedes.
“Fine. Let’s- if I can just understand this it will all be fine.” Samuel pulls out a kerchief from his linens and lays it out on his bed, taking hsi bag and dumping it unceremoniously onto the cloth. He still can’t glean much from them, fuzzy things at best. Like trying to look at things through a fogged up window.
Samuel mutters, gathers the bones into his hand. He glances at his door, making sure he was secluded. He can hear the front door close as his father goes out to cut firewood.
“I can’t believe that is how I came out to him.” he mutters. It had just slipped out in the moment, panic. It seems it took a bigger secret to help him confess to a smaller one. Strange, he did feel a little lighter.
“Whatever.”
And he tosses the bones again. Each time, the fog seems to clear just a little more then it had the last time.
There was almost something peaceful about this.
