Featuring Samuel Hunt 284-----
You can take the waste out?" the larger man asked. Samuel got up from his chair, they had just finished dinner, and with a nod he gathered his plate and piled it with the other dishes used for that night's meal. His father had always been such a good cook, and tonight's quail was no exception. With a small grunt he picked up the big pot holding all the dishes and exited the small house they called home.
The compost pile wasn't a long way away, tucked away behind some storage barns used by the whole settlement. Most of the rest who lived here were already in their homes for the night. So it was pretty quiet. Samuel enjoyed this time of day, the stars in the sky. He could hear the dirt shuffle under his boots and the horses whinny from the corrals a few buildings away, even cicadas had come out to buzz into the night air. He stops as he rounds the barn, straining his eyes in the dark before continuing again, towards the large shed off to the side.
He makes his way over, though in the darkness he fails to see the small hole in the ground. His foot falls right in it and ends up twisting his ankle, enough to send him crashing forward.
"shit!" he calls as the pot and dishes tumble from his arms in a loud CRASH! Luckily, he observes after picking himself up from the dirt, none of it seemed broken. He wrenches his foot from the hole with another muttered curse, tests his ankle, sore but it could support him, and goes about collecting the pot and dishes. Upon closer inspection, a few of them had been chipped, and the nice pot sure had been scuffed but it was nothing unsalvageable. He lets out a sigh and places them against the wall of the shed so he can collect the original food waste he had been send out to dispose of.
Samuel gets to work picking up slimy leaves and discarded animal parts they had deemed inedible, individually just tossing them into the shed as he gathered them by the handful.
It's when he goes over to the bones he saw glinting in the moonlight it happens. He crouches to scoop them up into his palm but just freezes, caught in an almost trance staring at them. He's not sure why. Perhaps it was how they caught the light, or how they lay, crossed over each other in places and independent in others. His head swam, it's like he could almost read what these bones were telling him-
No!
Samuel quickly uses his hand to brush the bones away, ruining whatever formation they had been in as he shook his head. No no, that was crazy. Weird. He was just tired and his mind was playing tricks on him.
Right?
He can't help it and peeks at the bones again. They had fallen in new ways but his head had stopped swimming. but they still drew his eye, almost as if tempting him to read them, to go down the route of superstition and witchcraft. Samuel shakes his head again, clearing it, but it's still like he's in a thin fog.
Samuel lets out a breath.
"Whatever I can't believe- fine" he groans to the bones, as if they were animate objects able to make requests of him. "Just- just stop that" he looks around, making sure he was alone before he stalks over to swipe up the bones and, for the moment stow them in a bag hanging off his hip. He almost felt dirty, even considering experimenting with such a thing.
How distasteful.
He only wallows in this feeling for a moment before he goes to collect the dishes by the barn. He needed to get home, or his father would be worried.
"Stupid bones."
