Description
Ah've had it with these darn teenage dragons on this darn field.--
This one was interesting. I've always had issues with balancing between painterly realistic and uncanny valley. Haven't done any proper detailed closeups for that reason, so this one was fun to figure out. At first it looked okay, then for a long while it was outright weird until it started to somewhat work out towards the very end. Very experimental piece in the end. Also APPAJACK.
Haven't done proper landscape pieces in a while.. But I'm pretty sure my next one will make up for it, I'm pretty excited about it.

Do you use sponges when you paint? Because That's the only explanation I can get for the texture in the left-center of Apple's hair.

The uncanny valley is really easy to step into when attempting realistical shaded ponies, but this rough "style" you use here works well; so well that I think it'd be very hard to refine it to the point where it would look better.
I really like the feel of it!
Nice use of composition, with AJs eye being on a golden ratio power point, and how the view slides from Aj to Twi.
However these are such basics tricks that you probably don't even think about it
I hope I'll be as good as you some day c:

I absolutely love the background and the leaves in the wind (and on Applejack's nose). Reminds me so much of autumn, my favorite season

I'd say this experiment was a success. I just love these painterly works. The gradient from AJ's brow to her muzzle is just gorgeous. So very well done!

Yes, Yes, Applejack
It's fun to see, in a good way, how you're making the transition to closer up shots. I feel like I've had to go in the opposite direction
Also, did I mention you made Applejack yet? Like you don't know you made Applejack. Hmm yes, that's Applejack.
She takes the crown in my mind so I'm rooting for her a lot but my mentions of Applejack are branching out a bit much now, so I mustache myself to leaf before it gets out of hoof.

I was going to have the obligatory Ponkey ping on the description but I figured your tingling Applejack sense would find the way here anyway.
And yah, I didn't really intend to go for less environment-y stuff. It just kinda happened with my flow of ideas. Good thing I guess, can't stay out of them forever. D:

Draw more faces! You're pretty darn great at it, and how can you not in a fandom based on a cartoon?

Closeups are so weeeird to do. There's so much more detail and it becomes a hard to balance out. The usual overall face isn't really that hard.
Only way to solve that though is to do moar.

Go for it! It really is different than scene oriented pieces, but they're also really fun to do.
