CHapter 4

Neshae opened his eyes. His chest hurt. He had a vague memory of being stabbed by Seiane. Everything was dark.

Am I dead? He thought.

There was a sizzling noise to his left. He really opened his eyes. He had only though he'd opened them before, like thinking you've woken up from a dream, but are still dreaming.

It was much lighter. It was night now. Roeh sat by a fire, cooking some fish. She looked somewhat stressed, as if she hadn't gotten much sleep because she had been trying to keep him alive. There was a bandage tied around him.

He tried to sit up. THere was a searing pain in his chest and he had to lay back down.

Roeh looked at him. "You're awake." she said. "I was afraid he'd killed you. Looks like he missed your heart though. You want some fish?"

This was a side of Roeh he hadn't seen before. But Neshae couldn't help but smile when the next thought came to his mind.

"You were wrong." he said. "He didn't kill me. And I put a little more than just a scratch on him."

She didn't respond. Instead, she brought over the fish she had cooked. And even though it hurt, he let her help him sit up enough to lean against a tree.

Neshae looked at the food, then at her. "As good as that looks, you know it's not gonna help me."

Roeh sighed and looked at the ground.

"You know what will help me." he said.

He finally saw some of her old self peek through. "Well you're not biting me. You can just heal on your own and enjoy the fish." She left the plate on the ground and left, disappearing in the trees.

She returned later with an unconscious human over her shoulder. Both were fairy surprised at this moment. He was surprised that she was strong enough to carry a human and she was surprisd that he had eaten all the fish.

She put the human down next to Neshae.

"You'd sacrifice one of your own to save me?" he asked.

"He's only unconscious. Don't drain him. Just take what you need and I'll bring him back."

Neshae bit the human's neck and drank.
