Chapter 5

Neshae woke up that morning feeling much better. Except for the fact that he had woken up in the morning, he was feeling great. He unwrapped the bandage to find that his wound had almost healed. But there was an annoying hole in his shirt rught under the dot of his bull's eye.

"Good. You're feeling better." Roeh said. "We can go now."

She was back to normal. Neshae felt the sudden urge to bite her, but it immediately vanished. She had saved his life after all.

He stood up and they continued their journey. Mushrooms that gave off their own light sprouted near the trunks of the trees as they left the area of the forest dominated by humans.

"Where exactly are we going?" Neshae asked.

"You'll see." Roeh said. "I can't say where Pseudan is. Hafeli's men could be around."

"If they were around don't you think they'd be trying to kill us?" Neshae asked.

"Only the slayers were sent out to kill vampires. He has others." Roeh said.

"Others?"

"Stop asking questions."

"I'll stop asking questions when I want to stop asking questions. And no one is gonna make me stop." Neshae said.

Roeh drew her sword and aimed it at his heart. "You will do as I say. I can find another vampire, you know. You aren't exactly rare."

Neshae drew his fire sword. "You want to fight? Bring it on."

Roeh was an experienced sword fighter, but her human speed was no match for Neshae's vampire speed. Neshae soon had his sowrd at her neck.

Every nerve in Roeh's body seemed to tense and she stopped moving. Her heart pounded so that Neshae could feel the vibration. Though she refused to show emotion, Neshae could see fear in her eyes.

"Oh come on." Neshae said and took his sword away from her neck. "Do you honestly think I'd kill you that way? That spot's reserved for my fangs."

"Let's consider ourselves even and continue." Roeh said and continued in the direction she had been going in.

Neshae sighed and followed her.

THere was a sudden sound, like a bell. Roeh pulled a mirror out of her pocket and looked into it. Neshae saw a face in the mirror and it wasn't Roeh's. This man seemed just a little younger than Neshae, with blonde, short hair and sky blue ees that betrayed his nervousness.

"What is it, Ysnoej?" Roeh asked.

The man looked at Neshae. "You found one?"

Roeh smiled. "Yeah. Keep looking though. I might just end up killing this one."

"Pseudan won't approve of that." Ysnoej said.

"Well I can deal with him if it happens. We are currently on our way, however." Roeh said.

Ysnoej nodded and the image vanished, leaving Roeh's own reflection.

"HE'S part of all this?" Neshae asked. "If he goes around looking for vampires he'll be drained soon."

"Let's go." Roeh said, though they hadn't stopped.

It was evening when they reached the Clearleaf forest. Mushrooms and lums illuminated the darkness and small creatures rested on the mushrooms that grew on the trunks of the giant trees.

"We will camp here." Roeh said and started climbing a tree to a mushroom.

Smiling, Neshae flew up to the mushroom, scaring away a small, furry thing that had been sleeping there. He leaned back against the trunk and listened to the grunts of the human climbing up.

When she reached the mushroom, Neshae leaned up against the tree, his hands behind his head, looking at her innocently.

"That would have been a lot easier if you would have carried me up here." she said.

"You didn't ask." Neshae rolled over. "Good night."
