Chapter 19

I wanted to bite that masked guy when he called me a coward, but, uh, I wanted to find out what he was doing here.  I am not a coward.  I'm to crazy for that stuff.  I was just a little tense cause I expected him to whip us nd feed us to the big plant.  I am also not a mortal.  I may be vulnerable to damage, but I will never die of old age.  So there.

The stuff in that bottle tasted horrible.  I don't know what it was, but the only reason I choked it all down was cause my wing needed to heal before I could fly.  The burning pain in all my wounds turned into cool relief.  I opened and closed my wing a few times to make sure it fully healed.  It was ready for action.

"So why noon?" I wondered once Dreyfus had gulped down his bottle.  He shrugged.  We managed to get back into the shopping center after dodging the spotlights in an extremely epic way.

"Okay, now where do we hide?" I asked Dreyfus when we were inside.  The shopping center was freakin huge.  I wanted to take off and fly all around it, but decided against that, knowing the inquisition guys would be watching.  I did not wanna be on that platter again.

"How should I know?" Dreyfus asked me.  "Where do you think?"

"I don't know!  This is your made up universe you think of something!"

"What?" Dreyfus asked me.

"Huh?" I asked.

"What did you say?"

"I didn't say anything.  I'm trying to think of a hiding place."

"Hey, look at this." Dreyfus said and began running towards a store that hadn't been closed all the way.  It was a pizza shop.  I ran to it and dove over the counter, doing a dramatic roll as soon as I hit the floor.  My awesome landing was somewhat ruined, though, when I rolled right into a cabinet, nearly knocking pans over.

"Quit that!" Dreyfus said.  "If those pans fell over the inquisition would have heard us!"

I looked down...or up...I was upsidedown at the time...at him.  "Sorry."  I got up and found the fridge.  Opening it, I found pizzas that weren't cooked yet stacked on top of each other and on a higher shelf there were pizzas that had been cooked and were still whole and just hadn't been sold yet.  I took out a plain cheese slice and handed it to Dreyfus.  "Here ya go.  It's dinner time."  And time to wash out nasty tastes, I thought, the taste of the cure still in my mouth.

"We shouldn't be stealing." Dreyfus said.

"From the looks of things," I said, "We ain't gettin out of here any time soon.  It's sometime during the night and we gotta wait until noon before we get out of here.  And since our inquisition buddies who love us so much are gonna be looking for us tomorrow, we won't exactly be able to hang just anywhere in the mall.  And the owners of this shop will be here sometime in the morning so we won't be able to hide in here the whole time.  Where in this do you find a spot for having lunch?  If we're gonna eat, we need to do it now."  I ate a slice of pepperoni pizza.  Good when hot, great when cold.  "And if that ain't enough for ya, you're not the one stealing it.  I am.  You are just an innocent person who happened to get a gift that was stolen.  Happens all the time in your world with i-pops and stuff."

"They're called i-pods." Dreyfus said.

"Whatever.  Just eat your pizza."

Dreyfus fell asleep sometime that night.  I stayed awake to keep watch.  All of a sudden, lights all over the mall came on.  People were starting to open their shops.  Closing gate were opening up and items were getting stocked.  I heard a juggle of a doorknob behind me as someone was starting to unlock the door and come in.  Quickly I grabbed Dreyfus and left the pizza place.

Dreyfus woke up as I was finding a new hiding place.  I found a huge tree with benches all around it.  We have a winner, I thought and flew up to the branches.  And so for the rest of the morning Dreyfus and I sat up in that tree.  Bored, I watched people as they came in and did some shoping.  A few of the inquisition guys walked around, but luckily none of them looked up and saw us.  Though I noticed NOBODY left the building.  Many people came in, but no one left.  For hours.  I'd been inside malls before and I knew that no one ever stayed in a mall quite that long.  And even if some people did, there were always some that left in about half an hour or maybe two hours.  I wondered if that had anything to do with us not being able to leave before noon.

When noon finally came, I saw people begin to leave the mall.

"Now's our time to leave." I told Dreyfus.  Unfortinately, there were inquisition guys around.  They seemed to be really watching out for us.  I wondered if anyone had ever escaped them before.

I looked at Dreyfus.  "You got a plan, Deer Boy?" I asked.

Before he could answer, I said, "Screw plans.  Just hang on."  I grabbed him and jumped out of the tree, spreading my wings.  If inquisition guys saw us, I didn't care.  I was getting us out of this place now and was tired of waiting.  I flew toward the doors with all the speed I could gather and thankfully (I hadn't quite thought this far ahead) someone was leaving at the same time I was about to ram right into the door and it opened.  We were out!  I flew across the lake and even some into the trees before I landed and set Dreyfus on the ground.  We made it out and were alive.  Now all we had to go was get of the stupid swamp and get my Fire Blade back.
