Description Chapter 40

“Sir Lewis!” Dreyfus cried as they approached the couch.  Sir Lewis looked up at them in a tired and painful way.

“It’s you…” he said.  “I have to tell you something.  There is a switch that makes the factory self destruct.  But we can’t escape the mansion before it explodes though.  One of us will have to sacrifice ourselves to destroy it.”

“Well this sucks.” Neshae said.

“I’ll push the button.” Dark Dark volunteered.

“Wait.” Neshae said.  “I might be able to make it out.  I’m pretty fast when I fly.”

“You might have a chance.” Sir Lewis said.  “Follow me.”

Sir Lewis led them down a long, maze of hallways until they heard the sound of machinery.  One final door opened and they were introduced to a large control room.  On the control panel was a big, blue button with an explosion etched into it.

“Well this is it.” Sir Lewis said.  “We’ll need a few minutes to get out, though.”

“Right.” Neshae said.  Then he noticed a box of beads the size of a dime in Dreyfus’s world.    Each one was made of some kind of stone.  They’re colors shifted like clouds in the night, not allowing them to stay one color.  “What are these?”

“Those are teleportation beads.” Sir Lewis said.  “The mayor was going to use them to teleport to different worlds so he could make evil clones of everybody in them.”

“How do you know this?” Dark Dark asked.

Sir Lewis looked surprised for a moment.  He stepped between the other three and the door.  “I guess there’s no point in acting anymore.  You cannot escape.  I have you right where I want you.”

“What?” Dreyfus asked.

Sir Lewis began to shape shift, changing from the white centaur to the beast form before.  They were trapped with the beast that had been chasing them around in the lab and had attacked them before and inside Mouse Trap City.

“Get Dreyfus out of here.” Neshae told Dark Dark.  “I’ll take care of him.”

“I’m not going to run off and let you get killed, Neshae.” Dreyfus protested.

“Look, kid.  I’m gonna hit that switch.  You don’t want to be in here when I do it and I may not even be able to get out myself, much less if I have you with me.  I have to be faster than I’ve ever gone.  You go with Dark Dark.”

“No one’s going anywhere!” the beast roared.

“Wanna bet?” Neshae leapt at the beast and pulled some hairs out of its shoulder.

The beast roared and threw the vampire off of him while Dark Dark and Dreyfus ran out of the room.  To Neshae’s relief, the beast decided to stay and attack him instead of follow them.

“I told you I would get you, vampire.” The beast said as he nearly cornered Neshae.  “You’ve caused me a lot of trouble and now I’m going to feast on your flesh!”

Neshae stood up, a painful knot tying in his stomach at that thought.  The beast lunged for him and he dove out of the way.  The beast pounced at him again.  He rolled in another direction.  He wondered how much longer he could keep dodging the beast’s attacks.  He still had to stall for time to let Dark Dark and Dreyfus escape.

Before he had time to react, the beast changed again, this time becoming a mass of large tentacles that wrapped themselves around Neshae.  His hands were pinned to his sides.  He couldn’t move.  He was lifted off the ground and a mouth full of fangs could be seen in the center of the tentacle mass.

This does not look good.  Neshae thought.

One of the tentacles knocked over the box of beads as Neshae was carried dangerously close to the mouth.  The beast slipped on the beads and fell over, letting go of Neshae.

I think they’ve had enough time by now.  He thought and pushed the button.  An alarm went off and the beast changed again back into the form Neshae knew.

Neshae grabbed a handful of the beads and took off down the hallway as fast as he could.  He didn’t know how much time he had, but he was going to give escape his best shot.  Behind him, he could hear the beast running after him almost as fast as he was flying.

The chase went on until the front door was in the vampire’s sight.  He smiled.  He was going to make it.  But then steam suddenly burst from a pipe in the wall and hit Neshae, throwing off his flying.

The next thing he felt were teeth around him.  He had been caught.  Instinctively, he flapped his wings to try to escape, but the teeth pressed on him harder.  The beast laughed, enjoying the fact that he had finally caught the vampire.

Neshae punched him.  The beast gave a muffled roar and Neshae cried out in pain as the teeth chomped even harder.  There was one more thing Neshae could think to do.  He bit the beast’s muzzle.  That made the beast roar loud enough for Neshae to slip out of its jaws.  He landed on the floor.

The beast was about to attack when suddenly, the ground trembled.  Neshae could see a blast of flame coming from the far end of the hallway.  He got up and flew to the door while the beast looked back to see what he had been looking at.

Neshae heard the beast roar in agony, but he didn’t dare look back.  All his attention was focused on the door.  He could feel the intense heat of the fire speeding up to catch him before he could escape.  Just a little further…

The fire was on his tail as he shot out the door like a bullet.  The mansion exploded, pieces of debris flying through the air.  In the distance, Neshae could see Dreyfus and Dark Dark waiting for him.  He smiled.  He had made it.  The factory was destroyed.  They had saved the worlds.

Very nice chapter! Well composed, and there was a sense of suspense through the entire battle. It fit perfectly with the Lemony Snicket music I'm listening to at the moment. A+ job!
