Chapter 11“And it was built so well that we wouldn’t even be able to find the way out we entered throu—“ the word was cut off as the floor opened beneath Rayman as if he had stepped in a hole. He fell through and landed on another floor. The ceiling closed above him.
“Rayman!” he heard Alaesia say.
“I’m down here!” he called, but she couldn’t hear him.
He looked around. He had fallen into some kind of a basement. Dusty boxes were stacked around old furniture draped with sheets to make ghostly, still figures. There was a slightly musty smell along with the smell of mildew. To the far right of the room was another hallway leading out. The only problem was three snarling hell hounds blocked the way out.
The hell hounds attacked him without warning. It was lucky he had turned his head in that direction or they would have caught him. Rayman back flipped over a chair and one of the hell hounds landed on the cushion. A giant spring popped out after being disturbed and the hell hound shot to the ceiling. The hole in the ceiling opened up again and closed after the hell hound was through. Rayman hoped Alaesia would be alright. After once again having to dodge a hell hound he hoped he’d be alright too.
The second hell hound leapt at him again. Rayman wound his fist and shot it, hitting the hell hound and sending it back. While he was distracted by that one, the third attacked from the side. Rayman picked a pipe off the floor and whacked it, knocking out one of the heads.
By then the second one had recovered and had leapt at him again. He whacked that one too and kicked the third as it came at him right after.
That seemed to be the whole fight. Right after hitting one, the other would attack. And neither seemed to be showing any signs of tiring. He would have to find some other way to defeat them. And that meant getting out of the basement.
Rayman broke into a run toward the hallway. The hell hounds chased after him. They were gaining on him. Soon they would catch him.
Up ahead, a wall of stone rose from the floor toward the ceiling. Rayman picked up speed, hoping to get past that wall before it trapped him with the hell hounds. And hopefully put it between them and him.
It was almost too high. Just a little bit further…
The wall slid up and touched the ceiling just before Rayman reached it. He stopped and turned around. The hell hounds slowed down, knowing their prey was cornered. Rayman wound a fist, refusing to go down without a fight.
A shrill whistle rang through the hallway from somewhere above them. The hell hounds stopped and looked up at the sound. Rayman looked up as well, wondering what it was.
The hell hounds took advantage of that moment of distraction and leapt at him. They both caught him, each head getting a piece. But nothing else happened. Rayman struggled to get away, but it was no good.
The hell hounds took off back the way they came, carrying Rayman with them. A hole in the wall opened up and the hell hounds went through it, then up a staircase. After a few twists and turns, they entered a room where a man stood with Alaesia and the first hell hound that had attacked him.
The hell hounds spit Rayman out on the floor as they came it. Alaesia helped him up and the hell hounds went to their master’s side like the other.
“Now that everyone’s here,” the man said, “My name is Osawen. I understand you require my assistance.”
“Yes.” Rayman said. “My brother has turned to stone and we need a cure for him.”
“How was he turned to stone?” Osawen asked. “It will determine what potion I will need to make.”
“So you’re just going to do it for free?” Alaesia asked, slightly skeptically.
“No.” Osawen said. “You have to earn it. You will have to get the ingredients for me. Now tell me how he was turned to stone so I will know what to send you after.”
“He was a vampire out in the sun too long. He was about to turn to dust but the magic of a tree saved him. He’ll die if we don’t get a cure for him soon.” Rayman explained.
“Hmm…” Osawen thought for a moment. “I think I know what you need to get. But first let’s rest. Night is here. And don’t worry. Your friend should be alright for another day or so.”
