Description Chapter 16

The voices of the wizards hadn't faded for long, for the two were persued deep into the forest.  Alaesia had managed to slow them down by sending up walls of fire and trees.  But each one had been passed.  The whole time Rayman was trying to pry an emerald off the hammer.

"I can get that off for you once we loose the wizards." Alaesia panted.

"Yeah, but if we throw this back to them we won't have to." Rayman panted back.  "And I'm not giving it back without the emerald."

"Fair enough." Alaeisa said.

The forest came to a sudden stop.  Alaeisa and Rayman nearly ran right into the steep rock that rose out of the ground to high above their heads.  An orange light illuminated the top, filling the sky with black smoke.  They had found the volcano.

A shout from behind them reminded them that they were still being hunted and they began to climb.  Hopefully Alaesia could use some of her magic to use the lava to their advantage.

They were halfway up when a group of robed figures stood at the bottom of the volcano.  They did not try to come up after them.  Rayman and Alaesia hesitated, wondering what the wizards were planning.

An explosion answered the question for them.  The ground shook, throwing the two to the ground.  Bright orange ooze bubbled over the top of the volcano right towards them.

"This is great." Rayman said sarcastically.  "Either sacrificed by wizards or burned alive by lava."  His tone was only half serious and Alaesia knew he thought they'd get out of this somehow.

Alaesia looked up at the lava coming down on them.  The Snake Cross Amulet hummed on her chest and glowed as she summoned up its power.  The lava directly above them solidified and cooled into stone.  Then one of the emeralds on the handle of Hammer of Thor suddenly snapped off and landed on the stone next to Rayman's hands.

Alaesia stood up and picked up the emerald.  Rayman followed and threw the hammer back down to the wizards.  What he shouted at them was drowned out by another explosion.  Alaesia barely had time to pull Rayman down before fresh lava came down on them from over the lava she had just solidified.

Everything was dark.  She must have blacked out.

Or were they dead?

If her spell had worked they very well could have suffocated.  But then why was it so hard to breathe?

She was beginning to suffocate.

Alaesia opened her eyes and saw a orange glow on rocky walls.  The air around them was hot and almost deprived of oxygen.  Rayman lay beside her still unconscious.  On her other side was a glowing orange sphere.  Alaesia smiled, despite her lack of energy.  She had managed to keep that sphere from hardening with the rest of the lava all this time.  But now it was time to break out.

Breaking out wasn't hard.  She had practiced this many times.  Without a second thought she was able to push through the earth above their heads and allow the bright sunlight to shine through.

When she and Rayman broke the surface of the stone, Rayman began to gasp for air.  "What happened?" he asked.

Alaesia looked around, but the wizards were gone.

"THe wizards are gone." she told him.  "And the volcano has stopped erupting.  We're safe for now."

He looked up at her with half dazed, half worried eyes.  "But what about the fire we needed?"

They finished climbing out of their grave and Alaesia pulled out the sphere she had saved.  "I got some."

Rayman coughed.  "Alright.  What's next?"

Alaesia thought for a moment, still a little dazed herself.  "The last thing is a scale from a sponge creature in the Naeugh Sea."

Rayman stood up.  "Alright.  Let's get going."
