Description Chapter 17

Part 1

Rayman suddenly fell below the surface of the water.  It was well into the evening when he and Alaesia had found a swamp.  Thinking they had to go through it to get to the Naeugh Sea, they had continued on.  But since then the swamp had been increasingly hard to walk through.  Shallow parts were getting harder and harder to find.  And neither of them ever really knew when they were going to find another one of these deeper holes.

Rayman reached for the surface of the water to try to swim up.  He felt Alaesia's hand grab his own and begin hauling him out of the water.

"Thanks." Rayman said as he climbed out of the hole.

"No problem." Alaesia said.  "Do you think we're going the right way?  Shouldn't we have reached the sea by now?"

"I don't know." Rayman admitted.  "This swamp just seems to go on and on."

Alaesia was about to say something else when they heard a splashing sound to their left.  As quiet as this swamp was, the noise seemed strange.  Both fell silent and stared into the fog that rose from the waters into the humid air.

THey heard the sound again, but this time a little closer and a little more to the left.  Then another time, but to their right and farther away.

The next time they heard the noise, it was right in front of them where Rayman had fallen into deeper water.  All they could see through the mud was what looked like a spoungy body with a slimy dorsal fin sticking up out of the water.

At that moment, the fog cleared slightly and the two could see out into the distance.  Water seemed to stretch on for as far as the eye could see.  A slight breeze blew their way, allowing them to smell salt.  They had found the Naeugh Sea.

"I think we've found our spounge creatures." Rayman said.

There was another splashing sound behind them and the two turned around to see one of the creatures climb out of the water onto the strip of land they were standing on.  It stood on four legs, the spoungy skin covering each leg, it's torso, head, and tail.  The only parts not covered in spounge were the fins on its back and its tail.  The dorsal fin was merely skin covered in slime.  The tail fin, however, was covered in hundreds of aqua colored scales.

Getting a scale would not be easy, Rayman and Alaesia discovered as the spounge creature released a low growl and took a few steps forward.  Behind it, several more of the creatures emerged from the swamp, believing their prey to be cornered.
