Description
Chapter 14Like Dreyfus, the shift of time seemed to change for Neshae as well. And soon, he too was standing in a room with a lone portal. Giovanni and Dreyfus were gone, however.
He looked around. “Dreyfus!” he called. Accepting that he was alone, he swore and went into the portal, hoping to find an answer to the confusion in there.
What he saw was almost his kind of place. He was in a dungeon-like place. Tunnels led out of the room and the sounds of scurrying imps could be heard. In the center was a pulsing, white orb inside a giant altar. The dungeon heart.
“I’m in Dungeon Keeper!” Neshae cheered. He loved this game.
“We have come to rid the world of your evil!” shouted a voice from down one of the tunnels. Three heroes came into the room with the heart. From every other tunnel, beasts and monsters poured. The only problem was the monsters thought he was with the heroes and the heroes thought he was a monster. There WERE vampires in the game after all.
A demon spawn snapped at Neshae. Neshae jumped back and was nearly sliced by a heroes sword. He flew to the ceiling to avoid any more attack, but then a fly found him up there. Neshae hissed at the fly and it changed direction and attacked the other heroes instead.
Neshae would have helped the heroes, but the whole point of the game was to defeat them. In the game, one played the dungeon master and controlled the monsters and killed the heroes, eventually taking over the world.
When the battle was almost over, only Neshae and one of the heroes remained. He didn’t look like the others though. He was dressed entirely in black, except for white gloves, which were now stained with the blood of the monsters, and a pale mask. There was something familiar about this man, but Neshae couldn’t quite tell who he was.
The man attacked the dungeon heart. Neshae stopped flying and landed on the guy to stop him. He cried out in surprise and threw the vampire off of him.
“I might have known there would be vampires in this dungeon.” The man said.
“Sorry to disappoint you, but I ain’t part of the dungeon. I just got here.” Neshae said.
“Doesn’t matter.” The man said. “You are a vampire nonetheless. Therefore, I must kill you.”
“Ah, so you’re a vampire hunter. The type of humans that destroys other creatures merely for being what they are and uses the ‘good and evil’ thing as an excuse.” Neshae observed.
“You’ll pay for that, vampire!” the man swung his fencing sword at Neshae.
“I have a name, you know.” Neshae jumped back and drew his fire sword.
The man picked up a crossbow from a fallen hero. “Must we complicate matters with names? It would be so much simpler if I was a vampire hunter and not a ‘whoever you are’ hunter.”
Neshae dodged a crossbow bolt shot at him. “Since when do you people go with simplicity? The simplest you get is ‘kill every vampire you see.’”
They fought for another moment, and the man managed to press his hand against Neshae’s chest right above the center of his bull’s eye. Neshae paused, wondering what the man was planning to do.
“I smell an Aeaunce on you, vampire. I have a knife in my sleeve that is spring loaded by my magic. One wrong move and it will be released into your heart. However, if you surrender the Aeaunce, I might let you live.”
“What?” Neshae asked. “You know about the Aeaunce?”
“You have until I count to three to surrender the Aeaunce. This knife is coated with something very painful and deadly, in case it does manage to miss your heart.”
For the first time, Neshae was stuck. He wasn’t sure what to do. One move and that blade would be released. And even if he was willing to give up an Aeaunce, he knew he didn’t have any. Giovanni had taken them both.
“One…”
