Chapter 23They were led into the castle. The room they stopped in was pulsing with magic. Ancient magic. A kind of magic that could drain all the powers of the werefoxdeer and the vampire and give them to the beast.
As they were being chained to a wall, Giovanni began to speak. “I’ve been waiting many years for this.” He said. “When I tried this on your ancestors, the spell was not strong enough and so I failed. But it’s been waiting a long time, waiting for the descendants of Ann and Hesaoh to reunite. And now that they have, I shall be unstoppable. I will take over everything…right after destroying you two.”
Giovanni summoned all seven Aeaunce out of thin air and placed them on a table in front of Neshae and Dreyfus. First was the Apple, then the Egg, then the Apricot, then the Umbrella, then the Nectar, then the Cinder Blade, and last, the Eye. Neshae was sickened by the thought of his father’s Fire Blade being in the monster’s hands.
“From what I sense in the Aeaunce, you two have already unlocked some powers without their assistance. Such as the ability to do water magic, your ability to almost know what the other is thinking or when the other is in danger, or even sense the other’s presence. Those come from the Umbrella and the Eye.
“With the Apple, I shall be able to communicate with plant life. They shall be my servants and my army. Only fire shall stand against them. Which is where the Egg comes in. Sheild magic. Most effective with fire, but can work with just about anything.
“And with the Apricot, I can go to the other worlds and take them over as well. Teleportation beads are similar, but with the apricot I can rip portals open to the worlds and transport my armies, where with the teleportation beads, I could only teleport a few people at a time.
“And next is the Umbrella. The ability to use water magic. The possibilities are limitless, but I think I’ll use it to drown you two. It’s quick, so you can’t escape and stop me, but also painful.
“And then we have the Nectar. Like flies to fly paper, this is very useful in luring people into traps. This shall come in handy when taking out Rayman. I hear he’s very good at saving the world, which I cannot have getting in my way.
“The Cinder Blade. Probably the oldest item used in the Aeaunce. Was created centuries ago. It is said that few people can use it. The very first fire sword ever forged and can only be put out with the aid of magic. Its power can help bring people back from the dead if the body is preserved well enough and the spirit is still hanging around. Like when you threw it at Bongo Bongo. It was because of the sword’s magic that Dreyfus came back to life.
“And last, but not least, the Eye. This one is mostly for the connection that you two have. But none of the other powers can be activated without the connection so it is essential. It is because of the connection that all the other powers are even there. And with the Eye’s help, all the powers shall be mine. I just have to use the magic that has been building up in this castle over the years and drain you of all your powers. Including all the vampire and werefoxdeer powers.”
Neshae entered Dreyfus’s head. Telepathy was an ability all vampires had, but Neshae seldom used. It took an extreme amount of concentration, which was usually blocked out by his insanity and the randomness of his mind.
The only way we’re gonna get out of this is by using those powers before he drains them. He told Dreyfus.
Right. He heard Dreyfus’s voice say in his head. We can freeze him and then freeze these chains and break them.
“Did you think you could use telepathy without me hearing?” Giovanni asked, surprising both Neshae and Dreyfus. “And the chains are enchanted to keep any of your abilities from working anyway.”
The magic in the room began to merge with Giovanni, then the Eye, then the rest of the Aeaunce. And then it connected with Dreyfus and Neshae. A sudden weakness washed over them as all their abilities flooded away from them and into Giovanni.
“Yes. It’s working!” Giovanni cheered.
Neshae felt a sudden pain in his mouth and his back. His fangs instinctively came out, but then were forced back in, shrinking, his wings were disappearing as well. He cried out, hearing Dreyfus cry out as his werefoxdeer qualities were vanishing as well.
When the spell was complete, Neshae and Dreyfus were neither vampires nor werefoxdeer. Neshae was a normal Raymanian and Dreyfus was a human.
Giovanni smiled. “Take them to the dungeon. I will kill them shortly.”
The chains that bound them to the wall were removed by the creatures and they were taken down into the depths of the castle to await their fates in the dungeon.
Neshae woke up. He had lost consciousness when his powers were drained. Dreyfus lay next to him, his antlers and tails gone. Neshae felt naked without his wings. They had always been there since the night he had become a vampire.
Dreyfus woke up as the cell door opened and Giovanni stood in the doorway. “It is time. Swimming won’t help either of you, as the room will soon fill up with water. I hope your thirsty.” The door closed and a dark cloud formed by the ceiling, spreading out to the four corners of the room and began to drop large drops of water. On the other side of the door, they heard Giovanni shout something about separating something called Worts from the other creatures. They were causing chaos in the castle apparently.
Dreyfus wrapped an arm around Neshae. Neshae would have done the same, but being armless, he just put a hand on the boy’s shoulder. “Don’t worry, kid.” He said, though the doubt in his voice was audible, “We’re gonna get out of his, just like we always do. And we’re gonna get our powers back somehow. And we’re gonna stop Giovanni and save the worlds.” He added with a sigh and a more confident and joking tone, “And then we’re gonna take you home and take a nice long break from all this world saving stuff. How does Miami sound?”
Despite their situation, Dreyfus smiled. Neshae was glad he was cheering up the boy at least a little bit. Now they just had to figure out a way out of here. And fast. The water was past Neshae’s feet and rising fast.
The two tried to find a weak spot in the walls, floor, ceiling, anything. But there was nothing. Other than a few small drilled holes in the ceiling to let the air escape, the room was pretty sealed. Neshae tried to break down the door, but the door was thick. And the water was high enough so that Neshae would have to use his wings in the water to provide enough force. But with his wings gone that wasn’t an option. Soon the two were floating by the top of the room, desperately trying to breath the little bit of air left before they were underwater.
Suddenly, something came through a wall in the cell and the water poured into a massive chamber. Above the noise, Neshae and Dreyfus could hear panic from Giovanni and he teleported himself out of the room to escape the flooding water.
When the water stopped, the two lay on the now wet floor coughing up water and gasping for air. Then they looked around them. Scattered around the room were large woodpeckers that had rows of fangs in their beaks, weasels that were five times the size of a normal weasel, mold covered zombies with pale faces, and something that looked like a cross between ants and worms with spikes going down their backs. Neshae guessed that those were the Worts (worm ants).
All eyes were on the two prisoners as some of the creatures began to eye them hungrily. Neshae and Dreyfus stood up, ready to fight for their lives. Though Neshae had to admit, this was one impressive army. There was no end to the chaos he could cause scaring humans with these creatures on his side. Maybe he might be able to get them to join him and turn on Giovanni…
