Chapter 4

Neshae jumped through the portal after Dreyfus.  At first, the place seemed pretty dark, but then his eyes adjusted and he could make out the shimmers of light reflecting off water onto rock.  They were in a cave.  A tunnel led out to their right across from a pool of water.  Fish swam in the darkness, passing over bits of choral that twisted and turned to look like swirls similar to the swirls on the rocks in several places in Rayman’s world.  To their left, also across the pool, was another portal.

“These are the portals to your worlds.”  Giovanni said as he stepped out of the portal.  “If you should ever need to return to your homes, this would be the place to go.”

“Where are we?” Dreyfus asked.

“We are in a place similar to the Hall of Doors.  Only this one is much more ancient and long forgotten. It leads to the Spirit Realms, where fierce guardians protect the Aeaunce.”  Giovanni answered,

“What are Aeaunce?” Neshae asked.

“What will help us in our quest.” Giovanni said.  “Follow me.”

He led them through the tunnel and they came to a much brighter cavern with sunlight coming in through a large hole in the ceiling.  Several tunnels led out of this room and between each two was a hole where water spewed out and ran along the floor to a pool in the center.  This one was only a few inches deep and was lined with tile.  Darker pieces of tile seemed to create runes of some kind.

“What does it say?” Neshae asked, gazing the inscription.

Giovanni followed his gaze.  “I don’t know.  It’s been so long since that language was heard of.  It may be a song or a story, or even a prophesy.  But it is unimportant.  Come this way.”

He led them through one of the other tunnels.  There was a smaller cavern with a portal on the far wall.  “This is the realm where we shall find the first Aeaunce.  The Apple.”

“Apple?”  Dreyfus asked.

“Couldn’t we have just gotten an apple from his house while we were there?” Neshae gestured to Dreyfus.

“No.  This one has a magic to it that no ordinary apple has.  We must find all seven Aeaunce and use them to open the secret to what we will use to defeat the evil in my world.”

“What secret?” Neshae asked.

“You will find out before the adventure is over.  Don’t worry.” Giovanni answered.

“Okay.” Neshae said.  He didn’t know why this guy would keep secrets, but at the moment, he didn’t really care for some reason.  He and Dreyfus were first to enter the portal, followed by Giovanni.

What was behind the portal, only Dreyfus would recognize.
