Description
Chapter 22Hesaoh turned to Thorn and Marie. “Can you two distract William?”
“I think so.” Thorn said.
“Come on, Ann.” Hesaoh said, climbing out of the dungeon cell. “I’m in the mood for some chicken.”
He saw the flood of imps around the giant Rasphoenix and went back inside. “That thing is huge!” he exclaimed. “And all those imps…that’s one big army.”
“The only thing that can harm the Rasphoenix is the fire sword.” Thorn said. The others looked at him. “What? A voice just said that.”
“Thorn, you should probably know, you have magic.” Hesaoh said. In the background, he could hear the imps rushing closer. “You’ll have to figure out how to use it in this battle, okay?”
Thorn looked surprised for a moment, but then said, “Okay.”
“Alright.” Hesaoh said, once again leaving the cell. “Let’s fight.”
They began their battle against the imps. Ann fought them with her sword while Hesaoh and Thorn punched at them and Marie pecked and scratched them. Hesaoh knew only one way to retrieve his fire sword. And that was to go into the Rasphoenix. And that meant letting it eat him. His stomach clenched as he climbed up onto a high rock and waved his hands at the giant bird.
“On the fourth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…” he shouted above the noise so the Rasphoenix could hear him. “Four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves, and a partridge in a pear tree!”
The instant Hesaoh suggested giving birds to someone as if they were mere property, the Rasphoenix snapped its head in his direction. Fury blazed in its eyes and its head came towards Hesaoh lightning fast. Its beak opened and the Raymanian tensed, hoping that his plan worked.
Though in that last moment, he was somehow able to look back at Ann, who was looking at the scene in terror, trying to get to him and save him. “I love you!” he shouted, just in case he never again got the chance. Then she was cut from his vision by a black beak closing around him. He was lifted off the rock and swallowed.
Hesaoh closed his eyes, immediately wishing he hadn’t done this. As he was sliding down the Rasphoenix’s throat, his hand felt something familiar, the handle of the Fire Blade. If he hadn’t been inside a throat at that moment, he would have smiled. He summoned the blade and sliced through the Rasphoenix’s neck, chopping the head clean off and allowing his escape. Though he was unaware of the unconscious form that fell out behind him.
He landed on the ground next to Ann and the others. At first, the imps stopped fighting and watched intently. The four waited for the Rasphoenix to fall, but nothing happened. Rain began to fall from the sky. Soaking everything.
Then what was left of the Rasphoenix’s neck began to move. Three heads sprouted out of the neck, each one gazing hungrily at the four below. The eyes of the imps shifted to the four. They were completely surrounded. It would take a miracle to save them now.
The Rasphoenix heads each gave a shriek of fury, the sound seeming to seal their doom with each piercing note.
