Poor guy. Too bad there's no easy way to dispatch a suffering snake. It really is a shame. He's a beauty.

Nice shot. We have rattlers in my area, but are not easy to come across. It's sad that it was hurting, but I'm glad to read that you moved him off to the side of the road... You are a credit to wildlife photography.

First, that's just awesome. I love snakes... Second... you're out of your mind! You do realize that lots of times snakes just lay very still unless you pretty much step on them, right?? I've been fairly close to plenty of these guys in southern OK and they don't always rattle just because you're close. Crazy

hey thanks, yeah it was a unique experience.

To set the record straight i encountered the snake upside down on the roadway, although i could find no signs of being hit something was weird with it. i turned it over with a stick with very little response from it, all it did was twitch its tail very faintly and follow me with its eyes. It was still alive though i don't know in what condition, anyhow i quickly and nervously snapped this picture than brushed the snake off to the side of the road where he could figure out what was up. as to whether he died or moved on i have no clue.

This is a wonderful shot. I love being able to see such detail in a photograph.

It's too bad you couldn't help it though.

To be honest there were some conditions behind the whole scenario that made my approach quite safe.
I was VERY cautious about the whole ordeal. Something was not right with this snake it had either been hit by a car, or was suffering from heat stroke along the hot tarmac. (Rattle Snakes have big problems if there body tempature starts getting above 95 degrees. It was too weak to even rattle its tail and all it did was follow me with its eyes I spent a good amount of time to ascertain that this was worth the risk, i moved it to the side of the road afterwards.

It was a rare opportunity. Shots like this are hard to duplicate for obvious reasons.

Ok, That makes a big difference!
Just don't want someone else trying to get a shot like this getting bit....copy cats sometimes don't have the knowledge or common sense some of us have.

Indeed they are. I enjoy relocating them, especially when there are visitors around as it gives me a chance to do some impromptu education about them and dispel some fears and myths.

Be afraid...be very afraid. I love the focus on the head and scales then the rest going slowly out of focus. I also love the limited color range of the whole photo. It's very subtle and quite interesting.
