Lark squinted at the trinket in his hand, holding it up slightly so that it was level with his eyes. Supposedly this stone was going to reveal what element he had the most affinity with. Scoffing a bit under his scarf, the boy clenched his fist around the stone and concentrated. In all honesty, he had not the slightest idea of what he was trying to do or what would happen but nevertheless it was worth the try.
Focusing on his right hand which was closed upon the rock, Lark closed his eyes and willed the trinket to change shape, disappear, to do something! Yet it was to no avail, leaving Lark to let out a frustrated sigh in the cool evening night. What, so was something magically supposed to appear just by a little bit of focusing? Lark tousled his hair. It was fine to visibly act impatient when no one was around, so he felt comfortable letting his irritation out.
Hesitantly, he thought back to his previous experiences with magic. He knew how to do this he just...didn't like to. He grasped the stone again, this time in both hands. Breathing in slowly he focused his energy into the stone and felt it grow warmer in his hands. He opened his eyes a bit and watched as the stone glowed a bright blue inside his clasped hands, vibrating a bit. This was it. Lark sent a last burst of energy and opened his palm waiting expectantly.
Nothing. It sat there, still a plain grey rock. Perhaps he had been imagining the magical glow from earlier. Or maybe he had been given a defective stone. Either way the process was extremely annoying. It seemed that this was one plant that refused to bear fruit.
Angrily, Lark hurled the stone at the ground. Upon impact, a large crack formed on its previously smooth surface. Crap. The young spirit went to pick it up again but upon brushing the surface with his fingertips the stone exploded. A giant gust of wind blew Lark off of his feet and slammed him into the snowy ground. His hair was sticking up now and his scarf had been greatly disheveled. He was shivering from the sudden cool air that had blasted him in the face as he stood once again, brushing the January snow off of himself.
In the rock's place, a small crystal floated, presumably held in the air by the wind that had knocked Lark down. Bitterly he snatched the crystal from the air and stuffed it into his pocket, turning to go back inside. So his element was going to be wind, huh? He cringed inwardly. Why couldn't it have been something nice and toasty, like fire? No, he had to be compatible with something useless. Sure, it was possible for wind to travel faster than the speed of sound, but when would that ever come in handy? Lark sighed and continued to trudge inside. At least he could turn in his assignment now.
