Description
The final picture of my extinct animal series!
This is a thylacine, better known as the Tasmanian Tiger.
They look like canines, but are actually marsupials!
They became extinct fairly recently. (early 20th century)
Such a shame :<
Oil paint on masonite board, 14 x 18 in.

So many sighting, so little evidence! It pains me when no one can seem to just get a non-blurry, good quality video of one on camera. If we just managed to do that then so many more people would be much more inclined to take interest in this animal, and that's always a good thing. Wonderful artwork by the way really shows the beautiful wild spirit or the Tiger.

sooooooo it's named like a feline, it looks like a canine but it's actually a marsupial.
Confusing.
I LIKE IT.

Exactly! Not closely related to felines or canines at all!

This is so beautiful! I love the Thylacine. I know it's a pipe dream but I hope cloning becomes viable enough to allow us to clone a thylacine some day. (They are doing research into it.) This is a lovely interpretation.

There are so many sad stories like the Thylacine's, especially in and around Australia. This is a beautiful piece.

When I first saw this, it triggered my memory to two books this animal is in: Leviathan and Behemoth, both my Scott Westerfeld. You should check them out!

I have read them actually! OR RATHER I have just read Leviathan and need to read Behemoth still.
I love thylacines, aaaah. The one in the books is so cute, too C:

They're sooo amazing...
And yeah, I know. I love Tazza, she's so cute! I don't know anything about thylacines, but when I heard they were extinct, I got a little curious. Comments on your piece make me want to look into it more...

I agree, it's an enormous shame these wonderful creatures are extinct. I really like your stylisation in this series of works; they are all beautifully-painted and full of life and motion.

Don't worry, they still have a thylacine fetus staying perserved when ever they decide to clone it perhaps....
But anyways, You draw sooo goood, you look like you could be a tim burton type artist, or some fable-like.

omg all these animals you chose are great!
This one makes me especially happy though, thylacines are amazing and I do hope they are still alive, there have been plenty of sightings, no confirmed evidence though ;n;
p.s. AUGH I LOVE THIS

ah, one of my favorites. i wish they were still around. the last one apparently died in captivity in the early 1900's in a zoo. There was film footage of them. So cute. =3

It depresses me how the Thylacines went out. It could've been so easily preventable, but nooo... :/ I fully support the cloning efforts myself.
I really like the style of this, it reminds me of the Chinese paintings of Fu Dogs and the like. <3

Yeah, I do too.
I've heard the arguments that "well, if we know we can just bring back extinct animals by cloning, everyone won't care about the environment anymore and it won't matter to them if animals become extinct"
but like... I feel like we appreciate wildlife more than we did back then. People didn't realize the consequences their actions would have. It was entirely our fault then, and maybe if we were given another chance we wouldn't repeat the same mistakes.
BUT YES. Thank you so much. :]

Ahhh thylacine *m* This is beautiful, I love the feel to it, amazing job <3
I actually read that they're most likely not all extinct, if the "last living specimen" died so recently...I find that easily believable, I don't even think all dinosaurs are extinct..

It's sad that all these beautiful animals are extinct. D': Mainly due to human activity (e.g. dodos, many actual tiger species).

IceandSnow In reply to SRLAC [2011-01-08 19:09:56 +0000 UTC]
DO IT. I love them :<
The other two I did in this series are obviously not the fault of humans, but thylacines definitely were. There's a very awful story behind their extinction, they were basically set up to look like they were harmful predators, which they really didn't deserve, and people were rewarded for shooting them on sight. The ones in captivity often lived in really bad conditions in zoos.

The thylacine's story reminds me of the situation with wolves in Alaska, due to Sarah bloody Palin's 'hunting enthusiasm'. :/
I think since from you're America you'd be more familiar with it then a Brit such as myself?

IceandSnow In reply to SRLAC [2011-01-08 21:48:45 +0000 UTC]
OH YES. GAH
Speaking of Palin, looks like she's going to be getting a whole lot of negative press because of the assassination that happened today. Did you hear about that? Serves her right for encouraging a bunch of right-wing nuts, it's people like that that make me really ashamed of being an American. -___-

Oh yes, I did...unfortunately (?), the UK TV news channels doesn't care much for US politics unless it involves Obama, so I read it on one of the newspaper websites.
I'm very left-wing, now I think about it...ever since the new PM David 'Call me Dave' Cameron started screwing over our country, I've really developed a distaste for right-wing policies/governments/etc.
I had no idea that Sarah Palin had anything to do with it...the website didn't mention. Was she one of the people who was encouraging the exeuction of Julian Assange, that Wikileaks guy?

I live is Tasmania, where these guys used to come from and nope we've never had Dingo's. By the time European settlers came in and starting shooting Thylacines becuase they took the occasional farm sheep they had their own completley tame European dogs. The only other native carnivores we have are such like Quolls and Tasmanian Devils and eagles which are fairly small, so you can imagine the ecological damage from these guys becoming extinct. The worst part is my ancestors had a hand in it ):
