Description If you came upon the Loftwing Pattern ([link] ) I posted, but had no idea what to do with it, here's the tutorial!

I tried to take pictures all along the way, but if you're still confused by anything, let me know. These are actually a lot of fun to make once you know what you're doing, but they are an investment in time. (It took me roughly four hours to make this purple Loftwing from start to finish.)

Thanks, Nintendo, for making something so cool, I had to plushify it!

Don't worry, sometimes I am blind to the obvious as well. (Okay, okay, it happens all the time!) Head fluff is a must! You can even customize it however you please.

About how big a sheet of each color would be required for a plush twice this size?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IchibanVictory In reply to Scampercat101 [2012-07-13 23:05:08 +0000 UTC]

Offhand I don't know since I've not made one, and I just work off of existing bolts of fabric anyway. I would have to guess that half a yard of fabric for the main color would be fine, same goes for the white. Really, it's best to have the pattern the size you want it and visualize how much fabric you'll need from there.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, and good luck!

I am soooo excited to try this! One of my best friends is a Zelda addict, and I'm going to make him Link's Crimson Loftwing for his birthday next week. (As well as Zelda's Purple Loftwing for me! How could I resist?) They look so cute and squishy!

I was wondering as well, about how big do they come out/has anyone tried making bigger ones? Is that a good idea or a bad idea? I don't know... >.>

IchibanVictory In reply to stellaaar [2012-04-17 20:57:11 +0000 UTC]

I was actually debating just blowing up the pattern and making a bigger one. It's already about 9 inches from beak to feet, so I don't think you'd want to make the pattern too much larger. Maybe 1 1/2 foot or so... I imagine anything too much larger would be floppy, unless you want floppy, of course.

It might be best to make one in the normal size, and if it goes well, go from there. If you do make a larger one, I'd love to see it!

stellaaar In reply to IchibanVictory [2012-04-17 21:35:59 +0000 UTC]

Ah, okay. : ) I'll probably try it normal sized first and then go from there. Nine inches is a pretty good size. I think I'm definitely going to try making one twice as big just to see how it turns out, though. More to love, right? : 3

IchibanVictory In reply to stellaaar [2012-04-19 04:29:03 +0000 UTC]

Definitely! I suspect a larger Loftwing plush would result in being used as a pillow of sorts.

It will definitely result in lots of cuddles. <3
And I bought all my supplies today, eyes and all! Tomorrow to the printers! And then, as I've decided to do an extra large plush all by hand...eons of sewing.

IchibanVictory In reply to stellaaar [2012-04-21 05:52:38 +0000 UTC]

Hopefully not eons... I like to have something on, movies, music, the radio, etc., to help me pass the time (else I go insane just sewing in silence), and also as a way to let me keep track of time. I will say that, doing it by hand, you'll have much better control, so it ought to come out extra cute!

stellaaar In reply to IchibanVictory [2012-04-22 06:21:12 +0000 UTC]

Did everything up to step seven today! By hand it takes a lot of time, but I'm making her twice as big and so far all the pieces look nice and regular. : 3 I can't help but think it's going to turn out sweet!

Hopefully I can finish her tomorrow and upload a picture. : )

Oh wow, that's fast progress considering you're doing it by hand! I'm stoked to see the end product! (I do usually "cheat" and use my sewing machine for projects, but every so often I take the time to sew by hand since everything comes out much nicer.)

What kind of fabric did you use with your loftwings? I bought flannel, because I wanted them to be nice and cuddly, but I'm thinking it might not be as sturdy. Do you happen to have any tips that way?

Guda-The-Hermit [2012-03-03 04:18:13 +0000 UTC]

Well, just wanted to let you know that I finished my Loftwing Plush. Unfortunately, I unknowingly sewed it wrong (had the seams and all that on different sides) so when I went to turn it out it didn't look right at all (the seams and everything was sticking out and it looked very sloppy). So I turned it back in (as that looked more normal) and stuffed it, with no other choice. Well, when I did that and I finished the plush, all of the extra thread and most of the seams are out so it looks...Well, horrific, to be honest BUT, the good news is I know what I did wrong and I pretty much know how to make the plush now. So hopefully I'll be making a new one and i'll pay more attention to the way I'm sewing Thanks for the tutorial! It really helped. It was just the fact that I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing.

Oh, yikes...but you've learned something valuable! Things don't always turn out (literally!) the first time, but it is good to use them to learn about mistakes made, and how to prevent them in the future. To be completely honest, my first attempt at a Loftwing was a big failure in a lot of ways! The body turned out, but the neck and feet were terrible! I got frustrated for a bit, but I returned to the failure plush and used it to draft a second pattern, to prevent the mistakes I had made. And...when everyone has seen is what came of using my first failure to fix the mistakes.

It's frustrating to go through, but this is a very good way to learn. I hope the second attempt turns out amazing!

Guda-The-Hermit In reply to IchibanVictory [2012-03-03 20:53:54 +0000 UTC]

Of course! Only a few frustrating but fixable mistakes were made more towards the beginning, but I quickly made adjustments. Everything seemed to be running smoothly until I went to turn it out, then I realized the fatal mistake I had made. Oh well, I enjoy making these types of things, and even though it does get frustrating at times, it's a huge reward to see the finished product

Just a few questions. When I cut out the wings on those cut out things (Loftwing Pattern), do I cut it out in white fabric if my bird will be red and white like Link's loftwing? And also, you say in this tutorial at the top that a few of them require some sewing together at the beginning. What do I need to sew together before I start the second step?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IchibanVictory In reply to Guda-The-Hermit [2012-03-01 06:48:23 +0000 UTC]

The wing that is part of the main body pattern will be the same color as the body. The wing pattern that needs to be sewn to the main body pattern will be white.

You need to have three pieces before you sew it all together: the two sides of the upper body, and one piece for the lower body. Before you can do this you'll need to:

-Sew the beak pieces to their respective body pattern (or white neck piece for the lower body). Make sure you have two "mirror" pieces for the upper body, so that when you sew them together, all seam edges will be on the inside once everything is sewn together.

-Sew the upper and lower wing pieces to the main body and lower body pattern pieces.

-Sew the lower body neck piece (white) to the lower body piece.

-Sew the feet on their respective main body/lower body pattern pieces.

I got my sewing machine to work, but I couldnt find the plug so the only plug that would work is several volts higher than the actual cord I'm supposed to be using...So my sewing machine is pretty much acting like it's on steroids I've got the underside done (not including the feet because I'm having a malfunction with the sewing machine) and also one of the sides done.

IchibanVictory In reply to Guda-The-Hermit [2012-03-02 07:32:40 +0000 UTC]

The stitching needed to attach the feet to the main body is short enough that doing it by hand isn't a chore. Probably the preferred way to go if your sewing machine is so hyped up! o_O

Guda-The-Hermit In reply to IchibanVictory [2012-03-02 13:15:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah! I'm currently working on making the other side of the bird and my sewing machine's still acting up so I'll probably just hand sew it because all I have to do is sew on the foot and the beak.

Guda-The-Hermit In reply to IchibanVictory [2012-03-02 23:25:34 +0000 UTC]

Ah, another question. When im lining up the two sides of the Loftwing, you said to make sure that the two beaks line up or else the face will look uneven. Is it alright if the feet don't really line up when I'm putting it together? I can line up the beaks perfectly, and the rest of the body is okay, but the feet are really off. Just want to make sure that's alright.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IchibanVictory In reply to Guda-The-Hermit [2012-03-03 20:49:28 +0000 UTC]

If you can see what's causing it to be out of alignment, it's good to fix it before you sew everything together. If it's just a minor thing (where it's just slightly off), don't worry about it. When I try to correct minor problems, they usually become huge problems, whereas when I just sew with the minor issue, it's hard to notice once it's all sewn up.

Guda-The-Hermit [2012-02-28 03:14:08 +0000 UTC]

How long did this take you on your first try? Would it be possible for me to try it free hand or is that too tedious?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IchibanVictory In reply to Guda-The-Hermit [2012-02-28 06:18:19 +0000 UTC]

I did most of it with a sewing machine, so it only took a few hours. (Some of that time was taken up with just tying off and tucking in the detailing on the wings. Actually..most of the time was spent doing that!)

It will definitely take more time if you do it by hand, but it will also give you better control over how it all comes together. Honestly, if you have the time and motivation, that's how I'd have preferred to sew it.
