Description
This is Yunie-Chan as Rydia from Final Fantasy 4.OMG I'm such a space case, ok, let me explain why I say this.
This photo of Yunie-Chan [link] has been out for a few weeks already. It's appeared on both Yunie's and Etaru's DA, and I, like a space-case never posted it on my DA. Which is really weird because I'm normally pretty good at that kind of thing. I usually keep track of things like this to a very serious degree....go figure huh? So now, I'm posting it here (finally, right?) to remind myself that I should be more careful about things of this sort in the future.
Now I feel really bad because as it happened, Yunie just surprised me with a 12-month paid premium account today. Ugghhh....I'm beside myself with "fail" on my end.
So on that note, enjoy!!

It's such an emotive pose you're taking; it's one thing to get the clothing, it's one thing to have an impressive body, but what makes it a masterpiece is how you get into character...

Oooo~ Rydia~ She's one of my favourite characters and the model suits her perfectly.
I Like the lighting a lot, the darker lighting and the black background make the costume stand out beautifully showing off the detail of the material. I adore the details on the costume, if its embroidery its gorgeous, and if its brocade its a perfect material choice!
The detail of the costume is lovely, and different materials she's used have been shown off well in the shot itself.

Thank you so much! Yes I tried to get the lighting just right in order to show off the costume detail. After all, it may be listed as cosplay but to me, the same rules for fashion apply.

When traveling through photographers at DA, it gets rather tiring seeing blowout everywhere. So it is refreshing to come here and see it done right.
Last time we talked, I thing we talked about Ring Flash. Is that something you are still thinking about?
This shot has great color, a beautiful model, great textile and fashion choices.
One thing I don't like to see in fashion is banding in your color gradients. If this were to go to print, the banding would worsen. The Dynamic range is high, but not too high, so it is really a lighting problem, like too much flash and not enough studio light. Even light through a diffuser would help.
You might consider experimenting with reflecting the light and diffusing it. A Ring Flash would help, because the flash travels along the same axis as the lens.
Are you using an overhead flash, or flash from the side?

I knew I was going to get it for that! lol. I do in fact have a DIY ring flash but forgot to pack it for this shoot. Yes I agree, the ring flash would have provided for a better range in the color gradients, I totally agree.
As for a lighting setup, yes I used a mounted flash for this particular shot. However, rather than using the overhead flash as a primary, I used it as an on-axis fill light....which is really why I regret having no ring flash at the time. On-axis has it's advantages over a standard studio (one left, one right) setup as I've come to notice.
As for the blowout, I totally agree with you. I mean SOMETIMES it's ok but I, like you, really value a good solid exposure. Call me old fashioned but blowout isn't really all that flattering on say.....a pretty woman. I do have a bit of blowout on the clothes themselves and a small portion of the cheeks but again, I really regret the lack of a ring flash.
Live and learn I guess?

Ok, you impressed meβreally. I did not realize you understood the issue to that depth. I also like that you have done some experimenting with light.
Outside lighting can be fun when you start playing with reflectors and diffusers.
You have heard my lecture on blowout, I am sure. Remember it is more than just looks. It can render a shot unusable commercially. I can fix blowout, but i used to charge up to $1,000 for large blowout areas. A lot of work goes into it. But if the advertiser has a shot they insist on using, it has to be fixed.
Blowout AND images with too many tones in high highlights or deep shadows are bad too, because the highest highlights may drop-out to blowout and the deepest shadows can drop-in to burnout out. You also loose Tonal Quality to the screening process for press. So staring with a photo with high Tonal Quality is an important consideration in choosing which photo a designer or advertiser will use in a layout.

Hehehe, thank you for that. I have a pretty good grasp on a lot of this stuff, however, more knowledge can always help refine things.
$1000 dollars for blowout huh? Whoa! You must've been pretty popular with your contacts if they wanted you to do stuff like that for them? They must've trusted in your skills.
You give very good advice. (I know I keep saying that but it's VERY true)

To repair blowout, you have to paint the area in by hand, add a bit of noise, blending modes, and magic. A lot of blowout and/or burnout on faces requires painting in faces. I did a lot of photo restoration that requires the same kind of thing, where part of a photo os torn off or damaged. I once did a large Kindergarten photo from the late 1950's. It looked like it had been crumpled into a ball and flattened back out, leaving chipped and crack in a crazed pattern. Pictures of missing faces were supplied and I restored the entire thing to pristine condition, at a cost of $2,500. Simple restorations I can do pretty cheaply.
Then there was photo correcting, where you fix messed up photos that other people take. You could make money on the side doing that. People are using these cheap services where you mail in your negatives, slides, or photos, where they are scanned for you. But they come back in pretty bad shape. Most of them just require Levels or curves and Dynamic Range.
I was not a high priced Graphic Designer and charged typical Guild Rates. I did not actually need to make money, lol. I did a lot of pro-bono work for charity. If you can help them raise money they can do more good work.
I have a busy day tomorrow at the neurologist, so I will sent the info the next day. Laterβ¦
