Description I normally dont post unfinished stuff, but i probably feel an urge to get some advice on this one. I´m pretty happy with how the design worked out. There isnt much i would like to change, although some parts are yet missing and the legs in the front arent in the right position.

The point is: This is meant to be part of a scene i wanted to do and due to the limitations of my computer i somehow feel i wont be able to complete it this way. This rendering here took 25 hours (!), in 1024 and i wont even think about the whole scene. I know that the Dirt Shader needs an enormous amount of rendering time, but i like how it looks, so i´d prefer to keep it. So i need some advices to keep my design but to simplify the modellig perhaps. I just have a 400 MHz machine and this is almost the end of what was possible.

The bodyparts were created using Hypernurbs in Cinema 4D, the legs with Extrude nurbs (and relief borders), is there a way to simplify it without losing too much aspects? Or a method more adequate than my used one?

UPDATE:
Finally changed the leg positions, added several smaller elements like those pipes at the back. Arms are still missing, i have a finished model but my computer refuses to render it I only get a white shape of where the spider should be...

Anyway, i need comments wether the changes are improvements or not please
I think i will update the older version to my scraps later on...

Also:
This picture is ought to participate on some kind of rpg (?) in progress, so if you´re interested, take a look at [link]

Didnt change anything about the UV maps since its quite a plain texture anyway. All standard cubic mapping

Thanks

Vielen Dank.

*Drools*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IgnisFerroque In reply to L-X [2006-07-03 12:22:50 +0000 UTC]

Its just a brass colored material and a fusion of a reddish brass pipe texture (dont know where i got this) with the Dirt Shader in the diffusion channel. + Metal-like reflection and a the standard metal shader as bump map. I think the main effect is because of the dirt shader, i love this thing. Unfortunately the rendition times are abou 10x more here with it

Thanks for commenting

btw, I read you have some troubles with the dirt plugin. Don't know if you already solved it. What I do in this cases is baking the textures. I use texture baker a lot, I've even baked shadows and radiosity into the objects texture. Saves hundres hours of rendering. You just calculate it once and the baker plugin turns everything into the texture of the object and that's it, no more calculations. Hope it help!

IgnisFerroque In reply to Portador-de-Tormenta [2006-04-18 16:04:13 +0000 UTC]

Dunno, i use the dirt shader in the diffusion channel of the texture, not the other one, is it possible with my method? I´ll have a look when i find the time...

Nice itzi spider you have there, the details look really awesome, you just might want to make the shadows a bit harder. Oh and the light looks absolutly fabulous.

Yes the lightning turned out kinda nice, although i didnt pay much attention to it actually, i´m somehow afraid it will look worse in the actual scene, as this is just a concept

I should work on it but was to lazy lately and its really not fun anymore on my computer its more like guessing than modelling

Thanks for your comment

This "thing" looks so cool! Very creative. I wouldn't even be scared of it, although I am of any spider (today I woke up screaming aloud because I dreamt a spider was attacking me ), because this one looks more like an insect-like hybrid with eight legs. There's a special thing about spiders that makes we wanna scream and run away immediately, and that is not the case with this one. Which is good in my opinion, but if you want to go for the real "spider-look" the body should be lower than the legs, more like it is hanging from the legs instead of being supported by them. If you get what I mean But probably you already used an anatomy reference and I'm just being odd

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IgnisFerroque In reply to geeny [2005-09-12 22:15:25 +0000 UTC]

YOU are afraid of spiders? I would never have thought that
My "inspiration" wasnt a dream. My parents were away one weekend and all out of the sudden all those spiders and ... well, dunno the word for Schnake... "fast, flying, assault versions of spiders, although not related in a biological way" decided to hunt me down.
They fortunately paid their price. But, i decided to make this thing, which is good. Its kinda neat, like those stupid Sony pet dogs, the smoke is a bit of a problem though, atleast indoor. I thought about adding weapons. Or a camera. It would actually be a really good photograph robot because it can handle the camera and the light sources at the same time

I know about the body. Perhaps its because of the perspective, but the body is quite near to the ground actually... dunno. Its unfinished btw. My reference were those wolf spiders, we had one in the cellar once

Well, thanks for your comment...

We have a lot of craneflies (schnaken) here too, but strangely enough, they don't scare me at all. I don't count their legs or look for the wings, but still I know that they aren't spiders and don't freak out if they touch me. It's like an intuitive thing. Strange, isn't it? And my intuition tells me that your robot isn't a spider (That odd vehicle in Wild Wild West did though...). But it's still VERY cool, those little details are amazing. And they look like a hell lot of work

IgnisFerroque In reply to geeny [2005-09-14 17:15:06 +0000 UTC]

Well, yeah strange.. you might be odd
I just hate it when the screens are the only light sources at night and those stupid monstrosities suddenly appear in front of me

Well, thanks, but no, it wasnt that much work. fortunately enough, i seem to work quite efficient when i have an actual idea in my mind (2 times a year approximately) ... and, besides, i have way too much time anyway

yes, i was kinda tired of weakly detailed landscape stuff and tried to do a picture i would actually like, too bad i dont know how to finish

I´ve never heard of Rhino, but on their webside is said that they wont port it to Mac anyway
